http://www.libgig.com/palinopposedtofreespeech The media has been on fire with news of perky, would-be Vice President Sarah Palin’s attempts at library censorship. The story goes further though than at first glance. Apparently, not only did Palin attempt to assert her authority over city librarian Mary Ellen Emmons in the case of the books but also attempted to fire her for refusing to do so.
Any proponent of free speech should be appalled by Palin’s attempts at censorship. Ironically Palin has been physically described as a “sexy librarian” but apparently she does not seem to have any concept of what a library’s purpose in society is. Palin has been hailed by supporters as a strong, intelligent no-nonsense woman. However, it seems that the real role model in this situation is Mary Ellen Emmons, a woman who chose to stand up for free speech under the threat of losing her livelihood.
It doesn’t help Republicans any more that members of the press were arrested alongside protesters at a protest outside the Republican National Convention in St. Paul on Monday. Neither of these news stories fare well for Republicans.
