Quick run down: a Danish newspaper, Jyllands-Posten, published charicatures of Mohammed the Prophet with bombs in his turban. But they're right. Insofar as Islam is concerned, that sort of profane treatment of the prophet is met with violence. It has been the traditional answer of Islam to that sort of thing for centuries.
We say "people should be allowed to say whatever they want;" they say "some things are beyond the pale."
I don't agree that violence is the best punishment, but that's a disagreement of opinion. As far as deciding what should and should not be allowed, this is much like the ban on child pornography. Every culture has to decide what is and is not allowed.
