I am very disappointed at my lack of Four icons.
OMG Tom Baker is SO AMAZING. Oh. He is just lovely. He is Doctor number four; 'there was very little acting involved!' he told us, 'people think I couldn't be that silly, but I was.' He told Colleen she should dump her boyfriend -
('Richie?' he said, 'that's a good start... poor men are no fun, all they can think about is how poor they are - and they can't buy you things! If he was really richie, then he could buy you things.')
- and Katie, she should quit her job and be on television, become famous and rich, 'and then you can go shopping!' 'Oh, I wish you hadn't done philosophy,' he told her.
Ann told him she liked Amy Pond, and was met with a delighted exclamation of 'does that mean you're gay?!'
Lucy asked which was his favourite scarf, and I can't remember what his answer was, but he said that he was always having things stolen. He went to a party in Shepherd's Bush once, and found two shirts of his stuck to the wall! 'I had a job holding onto my trousers,' he said, and I can't remember if it was then or later that he told us about the 75 year old women who come after him in Waitrose ('not Tesco, of course'). 'They give me a terrifying amount of information very quickly,' he said, '"It's so nice to meet you," they say, "I've been widowed 15 years and live quite close by," and then I know they're on the pull!'
I asked him who his favourite companion was to work with, and he said 'well, I did have one favourite, Lalla Ward - I married her! and we had some quite good times together' - which is lovely, because I've only ever seen him quoted as saying bad things about her, and it's heartwarming to know that they had good times, even if they were divorced in the end. (Mind you, when asked what his favourite monster on the show was, he did reply 'Lalla Ward'! *g*)
He was, in short, absolutely wonderful. When we went for the photoshoot - which was actually before we got autographs - he was terribly gentlemanly to Colleen and Lucy ('take my arm, my dear'), and when it came to my turn, he shook my hand and said it was a pleasure to meet me, and put his arm around me for the photo (and also with Katie). He was so friendly, and charming, and so utterly utterly lovely.
The rest of the convention was also wonderful, and it was great to meet Ann, and David, and Lucy, and re-meet Katie; and wonderful to see Colleen and Iona; and amazing to spend the weekend with similarly geeky types full of excitement about sci-fi series and silly little arguments about minor details of canon. *g* More on that anon; tonight I am tired, and mildly ill, but I had to write down what a wonderful experience meeting Tom Baker was before I forgot any details.
convention,
