What was that noise?!

Aug 26, 2005 03:04

Seriously, what was it? Something just squeaked... sounded kind of like eagles do on TV programs? Oh help, there it goes again. Now thinking mice, perhaps? Or even little birdies nesting in the loft. Oh bugger. I'll have to remember to tell les parents demain.

I've remembered more of what I'd forgotten earlier - there was more I was going to write!

For a start, what I actually did today. Not that it's actually, you know, interesting, but I may as well...

So, went to get my GCSE result. I was sort of hoping to do something with Epsilon, Beta or Sigma, but I just felt so rotten that I went home without even seeing anyone. Which is a pity, 'cos I would have liked to have seen some of the rest of my class, really. Oh well.

Then Mum suggested going to Gloucester, for some reason. I can't really remember why... I think to see Grandma, since she'll obviously have been seeing less of my aunt and uncle (they're on holiday, he's the one with the appendix... well, actually without, now). I'm not sure if there was any particular reason for going today. I really didn't feel like it at first, but I thought at least it would get some stuff done (we went looking for duvets for uni in Tesco too), and in hindsight I am glad I went. I spent half the time thinking I would rather be at home, quietly dying, but really if I had been at home I wouldn't have felt upt o doing anything, so as well as feeling pants I would have been deadly bored. So it was good to get out, even if I have now spread the plague around Gloucester. ;)

Anyway, as I said, we went looking for a duvet for me to take to uni. I was looking for a laundry bag as well, and also general kind of stuff like kettle and hairdryer. The only kettles we could find were (according to Mum) too big, so we didn't get one of those. I've been looking in the Argos catalogue too and haven't seen any smaller ones (except for the travel kettle, which is really cute, but too small), but Mum has one which is about the right size so if we can't find one, I'll borrow that. Or Nicky's, she's offered hers too as she never really used it. We did find a hairdryer, a dinky little one for only about £7, so that's good & sorted.

We also found a computer. :)

One of the information sheets I got from Durham has the minimum spec. for computers to be connected to their network, and unfortunately the one I was going to take (second-hand but improved) doesn't meet it. So Dad was planning to get all the bits second-hand from a shop down the road and kind of build me one, which would have worked out well. But then we saw this set (tower, keyboard, mouse & speakers) for a decent price in Sainsbury's or somewhere (they also had a flat screen monitor for a decent price), so we phoned Dad, he looked it up on the net, and when we got home he and Mum went out again to buy them.

Yayness! I now have a brand new, all singing, all dancing computer, and a flat screen monitor which won't take up too much space. The computer is brilliant, for a reasonable price I have 40Gb hard disk, 2.4GHz (I think) processor, plus CD reader & re-writer, and a DVD player! I really couldn't have asked for more. I was always hoping to eventually get a DVD player, but not for another year or so at least because I couldn't really justify spending the money on someting I don't really need. Even though I have quite a bit of birthday money left over, I'm going to have so much to spend money on at university, I was just thinking of asking for a DVD player for my birthday next year or something. To have it just included like this is absolutely brilliant.

No I just need to work out what to call it... so far, my best idea is Theta Sigma/Koschei (Linux and Windows respectively). Hm. I don't really feel that suits a computer. I'll have to think about it.

In perfect timing, I spotted Love Actually on DVD for £5.99, and picked it up. I was intending to buy it myself (although feeling slightly guilty for spending money on things which aren't necessary again), but Mum nicely offered to buy it for me as a 'well done for your A-level results' present. Very very nice. Much though I may moan sometimes, I do know I've got great parents in many ways, and I'm lucky. I do feel guilty that they have to spend so much money on me... but I'm just going to have to get used to that (fat chance, since I haven't yet). Especially as (after encouragement from Mum) I have decided to learn Russian at uni, which will cost Mum and Dad £75 a term. Eek. But Mum seems ok with it, as it's a chance I might not have again.

I feel bad relying on Mum and Dad so much for money, but then there isn't much else I could do. I've just discovered that my student loan won't even cover my accomodation for the year. Eek. I may at some point get a job, but I don't want to sacrifice studying time or making (& keeping) friends time at uni.

Icon-making has swallowed a couple of hours of this endless night... I'm sure there's a suitable Shakespearian quote for that, but no idea what. In addition to my Nine + TARDIS tau_sigma icon, I now have an OTP of Four/RomanaII standing in front of the Eiffel Tower, and one of K9. I haven't made the PotC ones yet, but have found some screen caps for bases.

My hands are freezing, so I think I may finally go to bed... for a little while, at least. Night.

money, university
