NOTABUG WORKSFORME

Sep 01, 2009 11:26

Is it odd that those applications that strive to be the most usability friendly, end up being the most god damn brain dead applications that cause me the most heart palpitations?

It's crap like this (and this) that makes me want do drown baby kittens belonging to Openoffice developers. Apparently it's a NOTABUG WORKSFORME to do annoying things that *NO OTHER APPLICATION IN EXISTANCE DOES*.

Then there's this (and this) that make me want to immerse the developers themselves in a vat of hydrofluoric acid. Why does no other application have problems with focussing transient (and indeed, non transient) windows? When you try to open a second file and it pops up under the window you invoked the file selection box from, then you really know something is not right. Hint: If you or your toolkits find yourself making any calls to anything at all focus related (other than setting _hints_ to say "do or do not bring this window to focus"), and you are not in the process of writing a window manager focus policy, you are doing something wrong. Please cease and desist.

Mind you, I gave up on mozilla years ago - it probably has similar problems - software that tries to be all things to everyone, and ends up being nothing to no one (particularly not long time users of the platform it was developed for originally). Bah, we need an office equivalent of opera (sure, I've got bugs submitted against opera, but none of them make me want to harm the developers). Something developed by non-morons, but still not by an evil sociopathic monopolistic company. And something that hasn't yet had all of the configurability stripped out of it yet.
