Summary: Fifty random moments that make up a beautiful life together
Authors Notes: Written for 1sentence where the aim of the game is to write one sentence for each theme.
Haven't done this in a while but I thought it might help with my writers block. I think it might have (a little at least).
As always, my most sincere apologies to grammar for the irrevocable abuse I have inflicted upon it. :O)
As with the other Snapshots fics, the sentences appear random and are out of chronological order but they do tell a story as a whole. Some sentences are directly linked to others while others are not. I've been toying with the idea of posting them in chronological order - what do you think? Would anyone be interested in that??
Snapshots
01. Ring
He wears a ring on his left hand, because even though they are not yet married or even engaged, they belong to each other, and he wants the world to know that he is no longer theirs, he is hers.
02. Hero
She has slept with one other person before him, someone whom she adored but treated her cruelly, someone who screwed with her mind so much she could not even comprehend the idea of sex and love being remotely linked, but with him, he is present and tactile and involved, and she has finally found love in sweaty skin and tangled limbs.
03. Memory
He is in town for some meetings so he stops by the studio to visit; she is surprised and elated to see him walk through the door, and when she sees him grooving along to the demo she is singing she remembers all those months of singing and dancing together and she pulls him into the booth to cameo on her song.
04. Box
The box is small, black with white polka dots, and when she opens it to find a shiny silver key he tells her he’s found an apartment in New York, because he needs to be closer to her than a five hour flight
05. Run
She is a confident person, but deep down inside a part of her never really believed she deserved or could hold his love, and though her years in the business has shown her you can’t always believe what you read, this time, the lies are easy to believe.
06. Hurricane
He hates that Hurricane Vanessa had to storm in and divert all the attention from her, particularly on this night, and when V cosies up to him for the cameras, his eyes automatically wander down the red carpet to her.
07. Wings
They walk the streets of New York, hand in hand, and he vaguely recalls a time, long ago now, when a walk down the street would mean being stalked by random strangers with cameras, and he knows that, among other things, his new wife has given him freedom.
08. Cold
It’s a cold New York morning, their first in his new apartment, and so instead of getting out of bed to turn on the heater, they create warmth in other ways.
09. Red
When he sees her all dressed up for their Today Show performance he thinks that she has never looked more beautiful, and he has no idea that she wears red so much because she once overheard him telling Amanda that he thought she looked great in it.
10. Drink
She’s momentarily tongue-tied, standing on this stage with the heavy weight of an award in her hands, and when she looks over to their table, he is grinning up at her, a drink raised in a congratulatory toast, and it gives her the strength to go on.
11. Midnight
She goes on a real date with Ben, and she does have a great time, so much so they make plans for a second, but she can’t help but feel like something is missing, and when she is in the car on the way home she gets a text message from him and realises exactly what was missing.
12. Temptation
He shouldn’t be thinking about her, not like that, not when he has a girlfriend, but she is beautiful and fun and exuberant and he tries with all his might not to give into temptation.
13. View
The first time he thinks that maybe his feelings for her go beyond best friend and surrogate sister is when she walks through the door, all dressed up for the latest award show, and all the oxygen seems to disappear from the room.
14. Music
She walks through the front door and is immediately assaulted with the sound of music coming from the kitchen; she gingerly tiptoes into the room and can’t help but grin as she sees him singing and dancing around the kitchen as he prepares dinner.
15. Silk
They have a few hours off between interviews and appearances, so they disappear into the streets of this foreign city, and when he sees a gorgeous burgundy silk robe, he ignores her protests and buys it for her.
16. Cover
They are discreet when they first get together, not ready to make public something that is new and delicate and private, and they maintain the ‘best friends’ story for as long as they can, blissfully unaware that nobody is buying it anymore.
17. Promise
He promises her that no matter what happens - how the film is received, where they live, how their lives turn out - they will always be friends and he will always be there for her, and his eyes are so blue and sincere as they bore into hers that she has no choice but to believe him.
18. Dream
The first time she wakes up to see him sleeping soundly beside her, she can’t help but question if she is still dreaming, and only when she gingerly reaches over and lightly touches his cheek does she believe that he is real.
19. Candle
Adam introduces them in a random hallway before rehearsals start later that day; he holds out his hand and she shakes it, smiling shyly, and suddenly there is a bright candle in the darkness of his world.
20. Talent
He’s not arrogant, but before filming he thought he might be able to help and teach this newcomer to the film world; now, after rehearsals are done and they’ve started filming, he knows she has talent far greater than his, and he can’t wait to watch her career explode.
21. Silence
She was visiting that part of the country with a friend, so she drops by the set to say hello, and somehow, in the middle of a random sentence as they sit in his trailer, his lips are suddenly on hers, two mouths moving together in perfect harmony as Vanessa and Ashley approach his trailer to bring him back on set.
22. Journey
It was an amazing experience, perfect for her first job, and when she looks back on the whole experience, the thing that makes her the happiest is that she got a best friend whom she adores from it.
23. Fire
He is horribly nervous about seeing her family for the first time as the ‘boyfriend’ as opposed to the ‘best friend’ but by the end of the night the five of them are sitting in front of the fireplace, playing a game of Monopoly and laughing their heads off.
24. Strength
It takes all the strength she has to push him away, but this is the second time they have kissed and she can’t do this; he is with Vanessa and she won’t be ‘the other woman’ or ruin their friendship, so with a quivering voice she tells him to stop, to be a man and be with Vanessa and either treat his girlfriend right or let her go.
25. Mask
He is due any minute now and so, like always, she takes a few moments to gather her wits and put on her mask, desperate to keep the truth to herself, not wanting to ruin their friendship by having him realise she is in love with him.
26. Ice
She takes him ice-skating in Central Park, bundles of clothes and beanies surprisingly hiding their true identity, and because they are just two friends skating and laughing nothing feels more natural than to hold her hand as they fly through the wind.
27. Fall
He doesn’t know how to get her to believe that for him it is her and her alone, so he calls Ben and asks a favour, granting a rare interview where he gets to declare to the world that he is the luckiest guy alive for falling for his best friend.
28. Forgotten
They both agree; it was a one time thing, a mistake, and they should just forget their stolen kiss, but when they turn from each other and are finally alone, their fake smiles fall into frowns.
29. Dance
You would think they had enough dances to learn, but there they are, waltzing sillily around the studio, grins plastered on their faces.
30. Body
He gets an email from an old family friend, who makes a joke about how in all the interviews she has seen of them that they cannot seem to keep their hands off each other, and he stares at the screen for the longest time, for the first time seriously wondering what that means.
31. Sacred
She hands him their daughter for the first time, tears in both their eyes, and she watches as her husband falls in love, and she has never felt more alive or in love or complete.
32. Farewells
She doesn’t know how to say goodbye to him, how she will go back to her old life after the past year, but she puts on a brave face and smiles and hugs him and when he says, “Call me when you get home, okay?” she thinks that maybe this isn’t goodbye at all.
33. World
After working a year straight in various projects around the country, they both vow to take a few months off and travel the world together, needing to relax and get away from it all, and one evening in a small Irish bed and breakfast, he surprises her with a diamond ring.
34. Formal
He stands on the threshold between their bedroom and walk-in closet, half dressed in boxers and a formal white shirt and holding two ties, and she wordlessly points to the blue one, making him smile in gratitude before discarding the green tie over his shoulder.
35. Fever
You would think that after five years that some of the spark and romance would disappear, but she still feels warm when he laces his fingers through hers.
36. Laugh
She knows he is going through a rough time, so she is playful and silly and she hugs and dances with him, and to make him laugh feels like the best thing she has ever done.
37. Lies
Vanessa says that she loves him, and he automatically replies with an, “I love you too,” but for the first time, the words feel hollow in his mouth.
38. Forever
Their faces are so close that they breathe the same air, and she trembles and clutches at him as they move as one, and in these moments, when it’s just him and her and them, she can taste forever in his kiss.
39. Overwhelmed
She has been to movie premieres before, both for her own movies and her friends’ ones, but this one, their first public appearance as a couple, is the only one where she has felt nervous and overwhelmed.
40. Whisper
He knows how she is feeling, that their walking the red carpet together in this town is tantamount to officially announcing their relationship and she is apprehensive about the reaction to them, so he squeezes her hand and whispers in her ear and doesn’t let her go all night.
41. Wait
He turns up on her doorstep one morning, nervous but excited, because he is finally free to be with the woman he wants, and when she opens the door and sees him, single red rose in hand and smiling unabashedly at her, she knows without him saying a word, and she grins, thinking he was definitely worth the wait.
42. Talk
Neither of them have ever met someone they could so easily converse with, and so it feels like the most natural thing in the world to stay up all night, talking about everything and nothing, and when they arrive on set with shadows under their eyes all they can do is smile sheepishly at Adam, who sends them to the make up trailer with an indulgent smile.
43. Search
She walks into the party, feeling like a fraud to this Hollywood world, and she scans the room, hoping desperately to alight on a vaguely familiar face, so when she feels a pair of arms wrap around her from behind and a warm and familiar voice in her ear, she breathes a sigh of relief.
44. Hope
The three little words hang between them, heavy with hope and promise, and then she grins, closing the gap between them and pressing her lips to his.
45. Eclipse
It’s what they consider their first real kiss; there are no directors, no set, no interviewers; the sun is bright and they are trembling and uncertain and its real, two people crossing a line that can never be uncrossed, and the only cloud that lingers overhead has a name, beginning with V.
46. Gravity
She’s a New York girl, so she drags him to the theatre, and she still can’t believe, holding his hand in the dark and humming along to the songs, that he has defied all the expectations of him, and the story takes on a whole new poignancy.
47. Highway
The sun beats down on their forms as they drive through the desert, nothing near them for miles but the blue sky and warm sand, the fleeting thought of escaping into anonymity for a while having manifested itself into a cross-country road trip.
48. Unknown
They go out to dinner, partly because Adam suggested they try and get to know each other to build chemistry for when they begin filming and partly because they have already become fast friends, and when some random person approaches them for his autograph, he obliges, suggesting they might want to get hers too, because although she is unknown right now, he has no doubt one day she will be a star.
49. Lock
She has been apprehensive about the physical side to their relationship, and because he cares for her so much and knows her history he never pushes, and when, one day, she looks at him beside her on the couch, his gaze fixed on the movie in front of them and his fingers laced through hers, she realises how much she loves and trusts him, so she stands, ignoring his questioning gaze as she leads him to her bedroom, locking the door behind them.
50. Breathe
He sees her, a vision in white, her face beaming at his, and it is only she has walked down the aisle and is by his side that he remembers to breathe.
