Well, I figured it out and have two objects and a few sore fingers to show for it. This is pearl cotton, size 8 in bright red. The color's a little off in the photos.
I don't think there is a most common size. I use lots of size 10 for "quick & dirty" style tatting (i.e., I need something really big, but don't have lots of time), but I don't have much in the way of options locally. So I pretty much use whatever I can find -- some 80, some perle 8 & 12, sometimes 20 or 30, & (if I'm lucky) size 40.
What size? hmmmmmmmmm~yes it depends:moniqueleighFebruary 18 2006, 03:52:32 UTC
When I'm doing a tatting demonstration for non-tatters, I use 1/2 inch rope (line) from my sailboat. The guys who often accompany their ladies to these fiber fairs think I'm doing something much more industrial than lacemaking so they watch with interest. lol Actually the rope makes it very easy to see what part is making the ring and also how to avoid creating a knot. They like to pick up the rope and try it and probably wouldn't come near the demo if it looked too lightweight!!
