My biggest concern after reading the fairly well-written responses to the preview shows - which, I have not seen or heard anything about myself - is that any one of us as players will take their criticisms as a challenge.
In my opinion, Vilification Tennis is only a good show show because it's funny. It makes people laugh about really offensive ideas, images and concepts because we present the offending thoughts in absurd, witty, and truly ridiculous ways.
It's also of my opinion that if we've got people wallking away from the show actually offended, then:
A: They're humorless tight-asses who can't take a joke.
B: They're regular people who wanted to laugh, but we just crossed the wrong line for them.
C: They're too dumb to get it.
D: We weren't funny.
If the right answer for any of the people who leave offended is A, B, and/or C - I'm totally okay with that. I'm happy to use them as my next punchline.
But, if the answer is D, then that just pisses me off and disappoints me as a performer.
I won't be writing a bunch of lame-shit material just to make sure I can cover all of the really offensive bases, because I never thought that's what the show was about. I'm just going to try to make people laugh - even if it's about the recent horrific, senseless homicidal/suicidal shooting rampage at Virginia Tech.
