Gakuen Mokushiroku: High School Of The Dead
So, I finally finished watching High School Of The Dead. I had heard a lot about it and being a zombie nut that I am, it only seemed fitting to watch an anime that's based off the end of the world due to a zombie outbreak. It’s a 13 episode anime, with a OVA in the works, that was based off a manga.
Visual: The animation in this show is rather awesome. The use of different angles and lighting are very well pulled off. Seeing as the topic is a zombie outbreak, the gore is perfectly done. Character design wise, pretty standard.
Soundtrack: If you love zombies like I do than you've most likely seen the move 28 Days Later. In the first episode there is a point when the music is a wonderful nod to the iconic 'In The House, In A Heartbeat' that is well know from 28 Days Later. I re-watched this scene a few times because it is without a doubt the best scene in the whole series visual and the music just makes it all the more amazing. The rest of the soundtrack is rather forgettable, sadly.
Characters: I'll be blunt, I hated ever single one of them from the start. However, most of them quickly grew on me. Busujima Saeko and Hirano Kōta are by far my favorite characters, whenever they were on screen I was loving almost every moment. Takagi Saya and Marikawa Shizuka made me cringe every fucking moment that it got to the point where I was hoping to see them die every episode. Saya is annoying little bitch and Shizuka is a dumb bitch with huge tits. Which brings me to...
Fanservice: When I heard this anime had fanservice I didn't think it would be this bad! Totally pointless and worst of all breaks the whole fucking mood of the show! This is about the end of the world, zombies, kids trying to live one day to the next! I do not need panty shots every other 5 second, nor did I need a stupid bath scene. The fanservice got so bad in episode 2 that I almost gave up watching this series. The episodes where there was little to none (I believe episode 11 had none, but I can't remember for sure) were great.
It's sad to see what could have been a flawless anime get ruined by something so pointless. Had it not had all that pointless T&A it would have easily been one of the better animes I've seen in a long time. That said, I give High School Of The Dead a 4/5.
