This morning was made so much more excellent by the fact that Anna and I stopped by Ula Cafe, where our roomate Rose is an employee, and got breakfast. Their coffee and food is fantastic and they are comitted to fostering a sense of community in JP by making a beautiful space where people can spend time and eat food that is ethically and locally made. I actually tried to get a job there in November, sadly they weren't looking for anyone until a few weeks ago and now I'm roped into this temp job... but who knows what will happen in the future?
I tried a cherry almond scone, per Rose's recommendation, and it is SO GOOD. Rose loves this scone so much that she was in constant communication with it via postcard while she was away for the month of January at Shakespeare and Co. Maybe the best scone I've ever had... and a latte, with an artfully rendered atomic bomb cloud in the foam. Oh coffee. Why are you so delicious?
Making the commute with the lovely Miss Anna also made my morning.
The last contributor to the quality of this day so far was the fact that upon arrival at work, I discovered (thanks to my old Placebo buddy rougevelvet) that Brian's long hair is BACK! And he's looking as lovely as ever. Which I have to say, is surprising, given that he's now 35. During the long and painful
mullet period, Erica had serious suspicions that he'd lost all his hair and had taken to wearing ugly wigs. I fought this theory until the very end and now I'm happy to offer proof that whether or not those were wigs, the real hair is back! Here are three of my favorite images as of late:
I'm completely obsessed with the 'border' feature on flicker (as you can tell) so beware of a lot of that in the near future.
Anyway, I'm so glad his girlish hair has returned. I thought he was going all masculine and hetero-normative on us, which was distressing. Now, it's more reminiscent of my favorite era of Molko, those early Nancy Boy years, when he bitched around wearing leapord print tights and short black skirts.
I've been totally out of the Placebo loop. Last I heard they got a new drummer to replace Steve Hewitt (eerily also named Steve...) who is only 22 (!!!) and is from California. I'm not sure what to think, only that the band is no longer the same band, with 1/3 of it now utterly changed. Luckily for me the peak of my Placebo obsession has long since faded, but I'll be curious to hear their new album when it comes out.
It's a very different era for the band certainly, what with Brian being a father, and the band now performing for human rights campaigns in Cambodia. It's good to see them maturing but I have to say, I'm glad I was there for the years of debauchery, hedonism and lipstick smeared, drug-addled lust. After all, that's what Placebo always did best.
I'm not used to drinking coffee in the morning so I feel really jumpy right now. I should probably go channel that energy into writing my grad school essay...
