So my good friend
catherinew has this little project she has probably mentioned in her own LJ, about infusing vodka. Now, I'm not a huge vodka fan, but I got nothing against it either. It's kind of like the tofu of alcohol...taking flavor well, but with nothing that really turns my crank in and of itself.
One of the things she's infusing is ginger...somethings she's done before with great success. But now she has a lot of leftover vodka, and we (and by "we," I mean "I") were pondering what other infusions we could experiment with. Cinnamon was the obvious first choice for me. But then I got thinking, and my mind went from vodka = potato liquor to potato to sweet potato. Clearly, what the universe needs is sweet potato vodka.
While she researched (thank you Wikipedia!), and discovered that such a thing already exists in Japan, I thought about what could be done with such a flavored liquor. While I'm not sold on the Japanese version (which is distilled from sweet potato and not infused with the goodness of sweet potato), I think we might have a winning experiment in mind.
I call it "Thanksgiving in a Glass," the final garnishing touch suggested by
3countylaugh. It is a mix of sweet potato vodka, Frangelico, and cream, ideally topped with a marshmallow which is set afire! While I'm not sure what the fire will do with the cream, we might want to toast the marshmallow separately. That's what controlled experimentation is for.
We'll keep you posted.
