So - John Locke, using an "ends justifies the means" ethic, tries to merge the two groups left on the island, and something goes horribly wrong... He finds his way off the island to go try to find Jack and entice him to come back and fix the error of his ways... Meanwhile, jealous of the Island's new bitch, Linus sees his chance and has John killed by his bitch, Sayid. I'm seeing this as a numbers game, where Linus is trying to get back to the island using this to his advantage.

If you look keenly enough,(well not really - Wikipedia is pretty much all you need) you'll soon realize that the writers for Lost have a running joke of turning philosophers into Action Heroes...
