Ok, so I'm breaking my self-imposed rule just this once. I went to Ozzfest on Sunday, and it was so amazing that I just have to post about it. Sunday was also my brother's 23rd birthday, so I bought his ticket for him, as his birthday present. He said it was a great birthday, and he had a lot of fun.
We had to get up super early because my dad had to drop us off on his way to work. He had to be at work at 7:30am, but the gates didn't open until 9am, and the concert didn't start til 9:20am. But, it was worth it.
The bands that played were:
Second Stage
Arch Enemy - 9:20-9:40am
Trivium - 9:45-10:05am
The Black Dahlia Murder - 10:10-10:30am
The Haunted - 10:35-10:55am
Bury Your Dead - 11:00-11:20am
Wicked Wisdom - 11:20-11:45am
Gizmachi - 11:50am-12:10pm
Soilwork - 12:15-12:35pm
It Dies Today - 12:40-1:00pm
A Dozen Furies - 1:05-1:35pm
Mastodon - 1:40-2:10pm
As I Lay Dying - 2:15-2:45pm
Killswitch Engage - 2:50-3:30pm
ROB ZOMBIE - 3:45-4:30pm
Main Stage
In Flames - 4:35-4:55pm
Black Label Society - 5:05-5:45pm
Shadows Fall - 5:55-6:35pm
Mudvayne - 6:45-7:35pm
IRON MAIDEN - 8:05-9:05pm
BLACK SABBATH - 9:35-11:00pm
One of the songs that Shadows Fall played, for the life of me I can't remember the name, they were filming to use for the music video for that song. So, that was cool.
Because we got there so early, we were one of the first people in line to get into the place. My brother had brought his camera, and an extra roll of film so we could take pictures (a regular 35mm camera). We were told that we couldn't bring it in, and it would have to go back to the car. Sorry, we were dropped off, we don't have a car here. "Well, then we can't let you in." BULLSHIT! "Can't we leave it at will call or something?" "Uhhh..." Stupid morons. Anyway. we had to leave the camera at the Customer Service/Lost and Found area. But, guess what, when we got inside, we saw at least three tents selling disposable cameras. Money-grubbing-cheap-ass-bastards!!! We spent most of the afternoon wandering around, because the first band that we really wanted to see was Rob Zombie, adn he didn't come on til about 3:45. All the bands were running ahead. I don't know if it was because it didn't take so long between set changes, or what, but Rob ended up playing around 3:30, not 3:45 as the schedule said. We walked around to all the booths they had there, we spent an ungodly amount of money on lunch (at least $25 for two of us), and tried to stay in the shade as much as possible. Us white folks with fair skin burn easily (and we did... both my brother and I have racoon face). We bought t-shirts ... five total. I bought three, and my brother bought two. He also bought a concert program thing, and a Rob Zombie greatest-hits-type-cd. During the time Killswitch Engage was on, we were over near the FYE (For Your Entertainment) tent, because we thought we heard the guy on the megaphone say there was a line for "Free Rob Zombie autographed cd's." Turns out, after waiting at least 30 minutes in 95+ degree weather (not factoring in the heat index which adds at least 10 degrees) with no shade that they were "PRE-autographed" cd's. The guy needs to learn to speak more clearly while using a megaphone. The cd's were $20, not bad, but they only took cash, and we only had enough cash left to get us dinner. And, the thing that sucks is, it was the same cd my brother bought earlier. He probably could have switched it. When they ran out of those, they were having people line up for PRE-autographed copies of the Devil's Rejects Soundtrack. So, needless to say, I was pissed because I heard "Free" and so did quite a few others, and it was "PRE." But, by that time, it was time to find a good spot to watch/listen to Rob Zombie. It was AWESOME!!! He played Superbeast, Dragula, Living Dead Girl, Free Bird, Demonoid Phenomenon, and one or two others I didn't recognize. He also threw out limited edition Devil's Rejects beachballs into the crowd. Woulda been nice to get one, but they didn't come near me. I was staying in the shade of the Fuse tent. Rob Zombie said that he found out that the amount of money made in the opening weekend of Devil's Rejects covered the cost of making the movie. He then turned to his bandmates and said, "Sorry guys, you're huffing it on the bus while I fly in my private jet," or something similar. He even commented on the heat and told us we were great (or something) for coming out in the heat to watch all these bands. He said he had to stop jumping around and all a few times because he was so hot, he was seeing spots.
Thankfully, after Rob Zombie was done, we were able to go inside the pavilion, and get out of the sun. We were also able to sit on something other than rocks, grass, or grass with rocks and mud in it. We sat there during In Flames and Black Label Society (Zakk Wylde's band). After BLS played, my brother went and got us dinner and a disposable camera, so we could take pictures of Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath. I sure hope the pictures came out alright. I have no idea what songs Iron Maiden played... I could hardly understand what they were saying (music levels extremely high, and the microphones were just as high, so it was hard to pick it out), especially since I don't listen to Iron Maiden much. They played songs off the first four albums, including one that has never before been played in the U.S. So, that was cool. Black Sabbath then played. OH MY GOD! It was amazing!! I recognized a couple songs they played, but I don't remember the names. It was just an awesome experience to see Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler, Zakk Wylde, and Tommy Iomi play together. It is also probably going to be one of the last Ozzfest's with Ozzy or Black Sabbath. I took pictures with the camera, and with my camera phone. Surprisingly, some of my phone pictures came out half-way decent. My dad called during the second to last song, and he could hear me, but I couldn't hear him. He was outside, across the street from the entrance, and could hear perfectly well what was being played inside. He also recognized the last two songs played. =) My dad used to listen to bands like Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, Jethro Tull and all them... but now he listens to Country. Go figure. Oh, Ozzy had said after one or two songs that he was asked not to play that night because he had a chest cold, but he was doing it anyway. He even mooned the crowd!! He threw about 10 buckets of water on the people in the pit area in front of the stage. He also soaked himself with about 2 or 3. It was awesome!!!!
Oh, the funny thing... the current lead singer of Iron Maiden told the people in the pit who were smoking pot to stop because he didn't want to inhale it. Why?? Because it fucks up his voice and his brain (almost his exact words). Then, Ozzy had said to everyone who got high or drunk (or both) to not drive home, "there are other ways to bust your ass." Oh, and the lead singer from Iron Maiden (sorry, don't know his name, and don't feel like looking), got really into the whole I-yell-something-you-yell-it-back-to-me-stuff. He was as giddy as a school girl during that. It was funny. Ozzy got into it too, especially during the one song that the melody kinda goes da da dadada dadadadadada da da da. I can hum it, but can't type it.
I am so glad I bought the tickets and went. I have wanted to go for a really long time. It was a blast, and my brother said it was a good way to spend his birthday... even if the only band he's ever heard before was Rob Zombie.
Pictures of Rob Zombie - mind you, these are from my camera phone, and I was probably about 100 yards or so away from the stage, so don't knock them. If the ones from the disposable camera come out half-way decent, I'll post them later on.
In this one, Rob Zombie is the white speck next to the bald guy's head.
