Six degrees of Grohl

Dec 07, 2008 13:04

Rob is apparently in DC, rehearsing for the Kennedy Center Honors thing. He and Chris Cornell and Dave Grohl are doing the tribute to the Who. Now, *that* is a fascinating trio to put together, I have to say. I anticipate lots of growliness. *g* And is there anybody that doesn't know Dave??? I don't think you'd need six degrees; maybe three, LOL.

In sort of but not really related news, our little blitz of Est updates are all up and linked, starting at the entry backdated to Nov. 17th. Dunno if I mentioned that it's a master list for Rob *and* Mark now, so there's a backdated log for Mark up, too, for September 2nd. I don't know why I keep telling y'all this. Maybe I'm hoping some of you will get bored enough to read it, lol. Or it could be eight years of people specifically asking me to say somewhere when I've posted something fic-related; it's a habit now.

Related to the latter is that I've been kind of holding out. Only kind of because I don't think (m)any of y'all will be interested, but after I'd been playing Est!Rob a bit, someone mentioned that he reminded them of the Rob in a series of fics that someone had posted a few years ago, when there was a fanfic board associated with one of the Matchbox boards. Since then, I have kindly had sent to me saved copies of some of Peanut's stories - I have a list now, of what-all they wrote, and there are 25 total, of which I've managed to accumulate perhaps a third. Some are real short, and some - most, I'd say - are fairly epic, well over 100 pages in Word even accounting for the formatting blips with cut-n-paste from the Internet. I haven't managed to read quite everything I've been sent yet b/c they *are* so long, but oh my God. Love. I was initially skeptical when I started reading the first one, b/c they are mostly set just before and during Rob's runaway years, so young!Rob, and thus he is mostly interacting with OCs - and mostly in their POVs. Also almost entirely het, though I happen to like that too so that's fine. But I was completely drawn in nonetheless and I am adoring reading these. I don't even care that they seem to have had issues with homophones or that it veers into way too much 'show' in places and the occasional head-hop doesn't even bother me much. I will forgive a lot if you make me care about your people (I'm looking at you, Nora Roberts) and the characters are awesome, beautifully fleshed-out real people, and then there is, of course, Rob. And the details are different (Peanut sticks way closer to canon than I have in most cases) and the setting is different and obviously we have some different conclusions regarding sexuality *g* but this is, despite all of that, so close to my Rob that it fascinates me. The writer doesn't pull any punches about his shortcomings or his darker parts, either, and all of it just resonates SO hard with me. Honestly, the last time I was this invested in a storyline (that I wasn't writing myself, which is different!), had to be Mike and Billie at the Est. Which is amusing, since that is what introduced me to the Est in the first place, and if I hadn't started RPing there myself, I wouldn't have gotten the chance to read Peanut's stories. Nice circle, that. *g* The only downside is that there's no way to contact Peanut to say hey, well done.

If on the off chance someone else *is* interested in reading them, or some of them anyway, let me know and I'll edit to include the list and upload what I have. They're good. They're the kind of fic where you get that extra kick if you're in the fandom, but they make perfect sense and can be enjoyed purely as stories even if you're not. :-)
