Don't poison!

matociquala has made my day. Yesterday, she had an excellent post on what aspects of her writing craft she feels she really needs to work on at the level she's attained (for those who don't know, matociquala = author Elizabeth Bear). Today, she had a follow-up post regarding a question someone had asked in the previous one's comments, about the 'beats' in a story, which she describes in some detail but sums up as: "The simplest explanation is that the beats in a story are where the emphasis falls." And then her final point is about what she calls "ellipsis poisoning." Hee! OMG, I am in love with that term for it. All of y'all who write should go read it, seriously (and not just for the poisoning point ;-) ).

Other than that, I am tired and out of sorts, and I don't want to deal right now with the renewed hysteria of fandom because LJ has deleted some Potter-related journals due to inappropriate images. As synecdochic explains fairly succinctly (why do I always forget the last 'c' dammit), it was really only a matter of time. I personally don't believe that LJ is targeting the HP fandom. They might be being targeted, yes, but again with the 'no investigation until reported' bit. It doesn't MATTER that the actual people of whom the image was created were of age; they could easily be construed as minors, and there IS no room for grey area there, not anymore, not where child pornography is concerned. Does it make it unfair and really fucking difficult for certain fandoms? Yeah, it does. Such is society; such is life. I honestly don't believe it is possible to have a corporately-owned site that isn't going to need to come down on stuff like that in the current political climate, particularly a USA-based site. It just isn't realistically feasible.
