It was a routine for Hikaru. Came to this library and proceed to Science Section. No. He wasn’t a bookish type. He was unfamiliar with anatomy and similar stuffs. And he was even a Google loyalist compared to books. He would just rather find the fastest way to help him with homeworks despite of not all the sources are accurate.

It was because the guy always stood there, traced every single books about physiology with full interest. The spot was silently claimed as his. On the corner side, near an outdated standing lamp which was sometimes shining brightly, but sometimes it would be just darkly dead.

His image was gorgeous. The way his long thin arm reached for the up high books, the way he put of his glasses and increased his smart-look level until thousand percent, the way he giggled and his eyes disappeared because of something attractive he might read, everything. Everything. Hikaru loved everything about the guy named Yabu Kota. It was just started one day, when he gave his best friend Inoo a company to search for book references that he suddenly saw the guy.

And for the next week, Hikaru had realized that he fell for him.

“Hey…”

Hikaru jolted silently. Gosh. Yabu should probably calculate the right time to speak. Because even since Hikaru heard his voice for the first time, it felt like they would just send him unwanted thrill throughout his body.

“Hey…” Inoo greeted back.

But he knew,

“I had a new book of your favorite!”

“Really?”

“Yep, this.”

Hikaru knew, there was almost no chance for him to get Yabu’s attention at all. Not when Yabu approached them and walked closer but he was just straightly offering the book to Inoo. Not when he smiled so gently and humbly to Inoo. Not when Hikaru knew whatever he was doing, he couldn’t just defeat his own best friend for his natural beauty face.

“That’s the newest edition of Nutrition. They’ve just received it this morning. So no displaying in the meantime.”

“And…. How could you get this first?” Inoo frowned.

“Kato is my best friend. He sent me list of new books and let me to borrow them first. Connection, you know.” Yabu grinned.

“Wow, you’re awesome.”

God. Hikaru wished for a second that he would have same interests with them. That he could be the boy who found science is amusing instead of sport or music. Because there was no way for him to just jump into their educated conversation right now. He was just a third wheel here. He was just standing right beside Inoo without having a proper word to be spilled out.

“Well, I’ll leave first.” Yabu suddenly said. “Bye Inoo.” And he turned to look at Hikaru. “And you…”

He didn’t even know Hikaru’s name.

Tsk.

What a lazy afternoon.

Hikaru inhaled the fresh air. The sky was a cloudless blue, and it would have been a shame to just stay at home and waste one of the warm days. So Hikaru stopped in front of a certain cozy coffee shop, trying to get an iced cappuccino.

There weren’t many people inside. Which was a good thing because he could just enjoy his cappuccino and listen the music without people loud chatter in the background. But Hikaru’s heart suddenly pumped in his mouth when the barista greeted him with that signature no-eye smile, and he’d been sure it was Yabu.

“Good afternoon, Sir. May I take your order?” Yabu asked politely.

“Well…” Hikaru paused. Damn. Why did he choose this casual white shirt and ripped jeans instead of dressed up more fancy if he knew this coming?

“We can recommend you our newest product. Hot Mocha Praline.”

“No. I want ice cappuccino.”

“Okay. One ice cappuccino.”

Yabu input the order to the system, and started processing Hikaru’s coffee not so long time later. They stood there in the soft, warm atmosphere. But still, something got in Hikaru’s throat that he couldn’t just try to speak casually.

“You came here alone?” Yabu asked, pouring finishing touch.

“Yeah, I was buying pickups on nearest shop. And just came by here.”

“For your bass?”

“Right. Oh, how do you know I play bass?”

“Just guessing…”

A little smile crept on Hikaru’s face. “I don’t know you’re actually working in this place.” He stated, trying to imply this is just a coincidence. That he really didn’t have the slightest idea Yabu is a worker even if he couldn’t deny a blissful feeling overwhelmed inside him when he figured out this fact.

“Now you know.” He laughed. “Can you tell your friends to come here? Help me with the marketing.” He offered Hikaru a large sized cappuccino.

Friend?

Oh.

Right.

“I’m sorry that I didn’t bring Inoo.”

True. How could he forget about that? It was a great suspicion when Yabu asked him whether he came alone or not. Because everything that Yabu concerned about him was just all about his best friend.

“What?”

“I may be an idiot. But I’m not stupid.” Hikaru said, realized there was no way to impress the guy in front of him even when it’s just two of them. “I know you like Inoo.”

“I like smart guys. They’re fun.”

“I’m sorry that I’m not smart.”

“I didn’t say that.” Yabu frowned. “And btw why are you suddenly getting-angry?”

“I ain’t angry. I’m just-“ Hikaru sighed, thinking it was too stupid of him. “Sorry. Here’s the money.”

“Nope.” Yabu pushed back. “My treat. Yours is free.”

“What?”

“It’s the first time my friend came to this place. Lemme treat you.”

And then Yabu smiled again, his elbows are resting on the counter and his palms cupping his cheeks. Yabu always has this neat appearance when he was on collage. But Hikaru found it should be appreciated when his bang just went messy by now. He looked so damn fine, and more handsome, covering Hikaru in goose bumps.

“Have a nice day, Sir.”

“Thanks.”

A Biology assignment. Shitload. Hikaru hates Biology. And sensei already warned them not to use the internet references. Only books. Which meant Hikaru should come to library alone today, because Inoo was currently attending Takaki’s basketball match.

And for the first time ever, Hikaru hoped that Yabu wasn’t there. He didn’t want to look like a total loser because he had no experience with books that often. He would just go blank and pick whatever he thought was related to the assignments. Without knowing if it was the newest edition or the right book or not. But of course, it wouldn’t happen. Yabu, like usual, leaning his body on the shelf and reading like he was in his own world.

“Make it quick.” He whispered to himself.

“Ah…”

Damn.

“You came alone again.” Yabu giggled, putting back his book on the proper place and approaching the pink-blondish guy.

“Yeah. I have homeworks.”

“I can rationally accept you came alone to coffee shop. But, to library? Nah. I thought you were just accompanying Inoo all along.”

“Oh shut up.” Hikaru looked at those brown orbs. “I know library isn’t my thing. I also hate this stupid assignment you know.”

True that. Hikaru might just admit yesterday that he was such an idiot. But that didn’t mean Yabu could just say something like that, as if he was just Inoo’s shadow and all lost when the pretty guy wasn’t with him. But it seemed like the kind of thing had no effect to his personal feelings. The fact was, he could jump in happiness when Yabu still came to him when there wasn’t Inoo between them.

So complicated.

Hikaru almost gave up to complicated stuffs.

“But good thing you are here by yourself, tho.”

“Huh? Why?”

“I wanna give you this.”

It was a paper. And for a millisecond Hikaru wondered so hard what was written in it.

“Our coffee shop will have a small celebration of our first anniversary tonight. I’m allowed to bring a partner. This is the invitation card.”

Don’t.

You don’t have a right to be happy.

It’s not for you.

“And you want me to give this to Inoo?” His voice turned sarcastic. There wasn’t much of a point in hoping. It was all about Inoo. Over, and over again. “Sorry, I don’t mean to turn you down but he already has a boyfriend.”

“And it bothers me because…….. what?”

“Pete’s sake Yabu Kota!!! You like him!! Like, very much!!”

“What’s wrong with you actually?!”

“I’m not your puppet! You couldn’t ask me to ask Inoo so he would go to your coffee shop! I couldn’t be your personal marketing for him!”

“What? Why did you make everything simple becomes so hard? What do you mean-“

“What I’m trying to say is…” Hikaru gave back the card to Yabu’s hand. “You should invite someone that you really want to invite to the party.”

Yabu frowned, and instead of taking back the card, he made Hikaru clutched it properly. “If that’s the case, I’ve just done it.”

“What?”

“Inviting a person who I wish to come with me tonight.”

“Eh?”

“I got it. That you said you are such an idiot. But you aren’t too stupid to conclude all of this, right? I was inviting you. Not Inoo. Not anybody else.”

“But-why?”

“Not a good time to explain a reason.”

“…………………………………”

“You should come. Don’t turn me down. And remember, the theme is black and white. You can wear a white shirt. You look good in white.”

“Matte-did you just-“

Hikaru needed to confirm. He’d been dying to assume that he was wrong all along. That maybe, maybe, maybe it wasn’t all about Inoo. Maybe it was-

“Ah, I should buy the props first.” Yabu cut. “Seven tonight, kay? I’ll wait for you, Hikaru.”

And he left the stunned Hikaru with a smile. A gentle smile.

And Hikaru had no idea what to do, or say, or how to thank to that guy,

for actually remembering his name.
