it's bleached and the color on the top is special effects cherry bomb. this particular color fades more pink than anything, but all of their reds are awesome. nuclear red is a nice bright one that doesn't fade pink. permanent reds don't take very well over hair that is bleached to blonde, it's too light and needs a base. all reds do fade relatively quickly, it's the hardest color to keep. i've had mine for about a month now and it's just now starting to look faded, but still not bad. i'd definitely recommend using special effects rather than any permanent color. it's basically a stain so when it fades you can use it again without worrying about it damaging the hair. permanent color is meant to lighten as well, so it's really just damaging the hair more than it needs to. to keep the color lasting longer he needs to use shampoo/conditioner that says on it that it's meant for colored hair, try to not wash his hair too often, and wash it in cool water rather than hot.

i haven't been able to find that brand in any stores lately, hot topic used to carry it but now they carry some crappy brand. there's a bunch of websites you can order it from though.
