She hovered in the doorway in silence. With arms folded across her chest, Romanadvoratrelundar observed as the Argolin whom Meena had appointed the task of system repairs and upgrading worked on her K9 unit. Normally she would have done the job herself but at the moment Romana was at her limit. With only just enough energy to watch she didn't trust ( Read more... )

The Doctor frowned at his TARDIS. He wasn't really in the mood for leisure, but she wouldn't budge. Clearly she'd decided he needed a holiday after his regeneration, which had been far rougher than he wanted to admit. "Oi, can't we go see Krakatoa instead? Or how about the Titanic? World War Five? Anything but Argolis."

Granted, he'd had a bit of excitement there a long time ago, but now it really was a Leisure Hive. I.e., boring. He didn't particularly fancy reliving the memories he had of Romana, either. But despite his coaxing, the TARDIS still wouldn't budge. He stepped out eventually, grumbling under his breath.

He stopped dead in his tracks when he felt a presence in his mind. A presence he never thought he would feel again, because he was the last of his kind. Suddenly, he was very glad his TARDIS was more stubborn than he was.

Passing by a pair of particularly loud Centari she couldn't help but roll her eyes at their boastful laughter at the joke one of them made. She managed to duck aside just in time for them to pass before her footsteps came to a sudden halt.

There was something touching the back of her mind.

A presence.

There was another Time Lord here in the Hive just as she was.

No longer was she paying attention the the people around her. Despite how tired she was the Gallifreyan found herself hastening her pace as she maneuvered her way through the hall and into the closest open area of the facility. It wasn't just any Time Lord presence that felt. It was one that she recognized all too well.

The Doctor ran. Not away from the presence, but toward it...he knew who it was before he saw her, and he could barely believe it. But there she was, just as he remembered her.

He simply stared for a moment, his eyes haunted and afraid. Afraid that she wasn't real, that she would just disappear if he reached out and touched her.

"Romana?"

His face was different, far different from the one of wide eyes and a head of curls. But when she heard her name and caught sight of the man standing there, staring, she could recognize her old mentor no matter what regeneration he was. She had no idea what had come to pass -or how much time for that matter- while she was away in E-Space so there was no way for her to comprehend just what he had gone through since they last parted ways.

And despite the weary look in her eyes she still managed a smile as she drew closer. His expression troubled her but all the same, she was merely relieved to have found someone she recognized in this place. --In a manner of speaking, that is.

"Doctor? Is that really you?"

The Doctor answered her question with a tight hug. He didn't care about the raised eyebrows, or the whispers about a lack of decorum. Not that he would have, anyway. Romana was real. He wasn't the last. And that was all that mattered.

"My TARDIS is nearby. We can talk there," he murmured eventually, though he didn't particularly want to move.

Admittedly the hug caught her off guard but for only a moment. Resting her forehead against his shoulder her eyes closed as she smiled even more. He had a different face but he was still the same Doctor she used to know.

"K9 is here with me. He's going under some repairs at the moment though."

"K9 is here? Fantastic!" the Doctor replied, smiling a bit himself. He missed his old android dog as much as he'd missed Romana. "We'll check up on him in a bit, then."

With that, he pulled back reluctantly, taking her hand and leading her to the TARDIS. It was very strange, seeing Romana again. She had no idea what had happened to Gallifrey, and he wished he could keep it that way.

But she would notice, if she hadn't already. She would notice they were the only two Time Lords left in existence. And then he would have to explain.

"Here's the old girl," he murmured fondly, placing a hand on the door for a brief moment. She was still badly burned and battered, but he would fix that eventually. He let Romana in, wondering what she would think of the new interior.

It was a surprise that was both warm and refreshing to see. With her hand lingering over the railing she made her way up the ramp, taking in the view of the TARDIS' new interior. It was the complete opposite of the starch white and simple console room that she remembered. It was quite a bit to take in, but it was still a comfort just being within such familiar surroundings once more.

With only the tips of her fingers did she trace the spaces between the buttons and levers, gaze lingering across the screen just overhead. After spending so much time in another dimension she never thought she would ever return. But she couldn't help the curious expression that crossed her features.

"Is Adric no longer traveling with you, Doctor?" Romana turned to ask, puzzled.

Adric. It had been centuries since Adric, but he still felt the pain like it was yesterday.

"Adric is gone, Romana," he replied quietly. "Happened a long time ago, for me." He wondered how she would react, knowing just how many regenerations it had been. "I've had other companions since, but it's just me at the mo'," he added, attempting a smile.

A long time ago. For him. --Just how long had she been away exactly?

There wasn't any helping of the flicker of sorrow in her eyes. Seeking out the the console screen as means of a distraction she said, "Did he settle in well? In normal space, this space, I mean." She wasn't about to ask when it was the boy left, or what the Doctor exactly meant by 'gone'. It was better to leave it vague.

Granted she was relieved to hear that hadn't traveled alone after she and then Adric had left. After spending enough time with the man it was obvious to her that he needed someone around to keep him in line every now and again. And all the while the younger Gallifreyan was fiddling away at the controls, trying to see what it was she had missed exactly in her time away.

The Doctor let Romana do what she pleased with the console -- if there was anyone he trusted with his TARDIS, it was her. "Looking for something? I could dig out the manual if you like; I'm sure it's gathered a few centuries worth of dust in a corner somewhere. Might be using it as a door jamb," he teased, fondly remembering her first incarnation's insistence on doing things by the book.

He paused for a moment though, considering her question. Remembering. "I'd like to think so, but then I picked up Tegan and Nyssa just before I regenerated...I think he felt a bit left out after that," he admitted, still feeling guilty for it. Maybe if he'd paid more attention, Adric wouldn't have...but he couldn't change it now, no matter how much he wanted to.

"Perhaps one of these days you'll learn that consulting the manual on occasion isn't going to hurt your ego," was the almost instant retort, a smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. "But while I do appreciate the offer, this isn't anything I can't handle." If anything it would probably be a lot of information for her to sort through, but at least for the moment she had time to.

Scanning the records of various points in time, half of her focus was set on the rapidly shift text on the screen while the other was listening to the Doctor. "--But you were able to show him more than what only his world had."

The Doctor laughed at the retort. "Haven't had to consult it yet, and I don't plan on it. Think it's complete rubbish." He stroked bits of the console idly, barely even aware of the fact that he was doing it.

"And I was, yeah. Think all my companions got to see a fair bit of that," the Doctor pointed out wistfully. "Blimey, I can't even remember how many I've had since..." He remembered them, of course, every single one of them, but he was terrible when it came to the numbers. He couldn't even remember how old he was anymore. Not that he'd remembered back in his Fourth regeneration.

It appeared to be that she was gone for longer than she had imagined. The readings on the screen was telling her not only the date (That many centuries? My goodness, I suppose time does fly.) but what had transpired so far.

"Well, I suppose in your old age it is forgivable for having a few gaps in your memory," she said with a bigger smile. "I'm surprised you even remembered my name."

The Doctor gave her an offended look. "Oi, I'm not that old! Only 900." Give or take a couple of centuries, maybe.

"I've only regenerated five times since you last met me," he pointed out. "Haven't forgotten anyone's name yet."

"Only five? Surely you can't have been that clumsy."

But it was half-hearted remark. For some reason or another the TARDIS was not allowing her to research the most recent events on Gallifrey. Every time she tried the screen would simply refer back to the previous articles she had been reading. With a furrowed brow and a hand on her hip, her free hand was tapping at her chin lightly.

"-- This is most peculiar."
