Fic: Back to the Start

Title: Back to the Start (1/?)
Rating: PG for now - I might take a stab at some NC-17 along the line to be warned
Pairing: Quinn/Rachel (eventually)
Premise: Quinn decided to use her first name 'Lucy' at college
Authors Notes/Rables: So although I generally pretend that whole Lucy thing didn't happen I also got this idea stuck in my head so I decided to try and turn it into a fic.
I hope this reads okay, I decided to write it third person refering to Quinn, but some characters call her Lucy.
Oh and I'm not American so I'm using Wikipedia to try and fill gaps in knowledge about the college systems ... apologies if I get get anything terribly wrong.
Oh and there is This Fic which sort of leads into this one. It's a bit of a companion piece and doesn't have anything Faberry and just establishes a Mike/Quinn friendship that will be in this fic.
I was debating a name for this fic and ended up being inspired by Lily Allen's 'Back to the start' which actually fits quite nicely.

Quinn sits at the small dining room table as she shovels cornflakes into her mouth while reading a text book. She absently wipes some soy milk from her lips when Cassie comes padding into the kitchen.
“You know, you have a type” Cassie pours herself a coffee and grins at Quinn.
“What?” She doesn't lift her eyes from her textbook, re-reading a sentence as she tries to multi-task eating and listening to her flatmate while studying.
“A type, that girl last night, was completely your type” Quinn notices the way Cassie's smiling at her and knows her best friend is throughly enjoying her supposed discovery.
“Don't flatter yourself” Quinn smirks before scraping the last few cornflakes from her bowl.
Cassie rolls her eyes “Whatever Lucy Q, you can't deny you have a thing for brunettes”
“Jessie was blonde” Quinn counters, abandoning her study since Cassie is set on distracting her.
“Not girlfriends, hook-ups. Cause hook-ups are just about how they look, and you my dear have a penchant for short brunettes. Especially noticably jewish ones, well more so when you drink tequila”
Quinn laughs before grabbing her bowl to drop it in the sink. “Really Cassie, I wish I had something to analysie about yor choices but you'd settle for anything with tits” As the words leave her mouth she realises it sounds a lot harsher than she intended.
Cassie laughs and moves to the living space to flop down on the couch. She knew it was a joke but the bite to Quinns comment let her know the topic had struck a nerve. She grabs a newspaper and starts to flick through it while Quinn returns to her studies.
“Hey Lucy Q” Cassie suddenly draws the blonde back into conversation
“What?” Quinn looks up from her books.
“Did you know that the high school show choir finals are in New York this weekend?”
“Um, no” She stares at Cassie wondering if there is a point
“Let's go!” Cassie exclaims “You need a break”
Quinn rolls her eyes “Thanks but I'd rather study for the LSAT”
“Come on, I loved Glee club and I want to relive the memories. We were champions before damn Vocal Adernaline came along”
Quinn shakes her head “You always remind me”
“Sorry but New Directions were never national champions” Cassie grins
“Yea but you admited you only ever swayed in the back-ground” Quinn counters “and you weren't even at high school when they were champions”
“Deatils details - it was fun!” She grins “We're going, I am dragging you out of this apartment, no questions”
“I thought you were dragging me to Julia's party tonight already” Quinn smirks “You can't drag me out too often”
“Please Abby is going to be there, that's not dragging, that's getting you laid”
Quinn rolls her eyes “I don't know about Abby, we went on one date and she's kinda … clingy”
“She's sweet, and since you didn't bring home that cute jew I know you're in need of action”
“Oh god” Quinn covers her face with her hands “Please stop talking about my sex life and okay I will go to the damn glee show with you”
Cassie claps her hands in excitement of her victory.

“Next up, from William McKinley High in Ohio, the New Directions!” the annoucer introduces the next act and Quinn claps. Cassie stands up, Quinn spots Mr Schuester and Ms Pillsbury also standing. Cassie starts whooping in excitement as Quinn noticees two more people in the audience standing. She slides down in her seat as they turn to see who is cheering in the back. She tugs at Cassie who sits down as New Directions start.
“Is that her” Cassie asked as she flops back into her chair
“Who?” Quinn looks at her. Of course it's Rachel and Kurt sitting in the autorium, several rows ahead of them. Quinn is so glad she insisted on sitting in the back.
“Rachel!” Cassies' eyes sparkle as she takes delight in Quinns uncomforable posture. Still slunk down in her chair, she really doesn't want to be spotted by her old high school friends. She hasn't seen those two since leaving Lima.
“Yes it's Rachel, with Kurt. You somehow knew they'd be here didn't you?” She glares at Cassie.
“No” she denies but her grin suggests otherwise “I just hoped they would have the same nostalgia as me and come to cheer on their old shcool” Cassie turns her attention to the teenagers on stage. Quinn smiles, they were actually good, maybe better than when she was there. Probably 20 strong, maybe more, they'd barely scraped minimum numbers back when she was at high school. She wonders if this team had ever come out on top, they'd made it to top 10 her senior year but they never won. Cassie cheers again when they finish, Quinn tries to hide behind the seats in front of her, They stay put to watch Cassie's old school too, deciding to leave during the next intermission.
“You sure you don't want to stay and see if they place?” Cassie askes
“Nah it's okay” she wants to get in some more study before the party later on. They turn a corner and find a group of excited teenagers milling around a very pleased looked Mr Shuester. Cassie gives Quinn a shove in his direction, she is about to turn and growl at her friend but her old teacher has spotted her
“Quinn!” He exclaims, waving at her eagerly. A few of his students turned to look at her as Mr Shuester comes rushing over. “Are you here with Rachel and Kurt?”
“Um no” Quinn shakes her head “My friend Cassie and I thought it would be a bit of a trip down memory lane” He looks at her friend, quickly taking her hand and shaking it vigoursly.
“So you were in Glee also?” He smiles warmly, Cassie's a little taken aback about how enthuastic this man is about show choir.
“Yea, we came a close second to Vocal Adrenaline a few times” Cassie responds as she shakes his hand.
A few of the New Directions members are hovering around. Quinn moves her hand to brush her bangs from her eyes, the rainbow braclet on her wrist is suddenly noticed by one of the students.
“Are you gay too?” One of the girls askes bluntly.
Quinn looks at her wrist for a beat. “Oh, yea I'm a lesbian” she forgets sometimes outside of her bubble of friends it's still an unknown fact about her..
“Really?” Mr Scheuster looks shocked. “Sorry, it's just you were all about the boy drama in high school” he quickly tries to backpeddel, obviously trying to not offend her.
“Well, it took me awhile to figure it all out. I think some of my drama was caused by that confusion” She admits.
“So are you an actress too?” Another kid asks. They'd obviouslly already met Rachel and Kurt, she wonders if they'd also been grilled with questions.
“So is she your girlfriend” Another one asks, not caring Quinn hadn't responded to the other question.
Quinn laughs, “No I'm not an actress, and no she's not my girlfriend”
“I am her ex though” Cassie adds. She loves to point out they are a walking lesbian cliché.
“So what do you do Quinn? What brings you to New York?” Mr Schuster asks, of course he doesn' know she's been here four years already.
“Pre -Law at Columbia” she can see the pride shimmering in his eyes. She knew he probably thought he had some big impact on her through music. Truth was she'd barely thought about him since graduating. She decides to give him some sort of gratatude, something to maybe inspire the poor kids he was probably still subjecting to 80's muic. “Honeslty the extra curricular activies look great on college transcripts” It was true, of course it had been other activites she picked up in her Senior year that probably held more weight. Glee did help show she was well rounded though.
“And it helps on kareoke nights!” Cassie nudges Quinn who laughs, it was the only time she sung these days, but it was hard to pry the microphone away from her after a few drinks.
“Well, we better get going” He claps his hands “are you staying? We made it to the next round” He grins. Obviously excited Glee was doing so well. She hoped these kids were good enough to not be getting daily slushies.
“Sorry I have LSATs to study for” she waves as they part ways. Cassie links arms as they head outside.
“So Lucy Q tell me that wasn't too much fun”
Quinn rolls her eyes, not for the first time she thinks Cassie has a warped sense of humor. Her ex has a strange facination with Quinns high school years. Probably because Quinn Fabray seems so removed from the Lucy Fabray she met at Columbia. The opinionated freshman who threw away her high-school identity to become involved in politics, feminism and every gay event she could find. To Quinn it was just a change of name with a brand new city, but to Cassie it looked like a different world. Cassie was one of the few people who knew about her as Quinn, after the thanksgiving she'd taken her girlfriend back to Lima. The new knowledge had landed her with the new nickname. Cassie was the only one who called her Lucy Q. Her middle name was Quinn and no-one questioned why Cassie decided to use the nickname, she could be a bit odd anyway. Although after that trip to Lima the older girl had dumped her before the New Year, somehow after three months of not speaking to her the brunette had worked her way back into her life. They worked better as friends, with a bit of hindsight and the heartbreak behind her she could agree what Cassie had done at the time was right. Staying together would have ruined a fantastic friendship.
“Pretzels!” Cassie unhooks her arm and bounces away at the sight of pretzel cart. Quinn never understood the other girls excitement over the New York vending carts. Cassie is a New Jersey native, they were hardly the same New York novelty as when Quinn first arrived and would often devour their hot dogs. But Cassie loves Pretzels in the way Quinn loves bacon. She starts to follow Cassie when suddenly she hears that name being called, the one she'd barely heard in four years being yelled out twice in one day.
“Quinn!” She turns and spots Rachel Berry bounding toward her. Kurt Hummel is slowly walking along behind her, aloofly holding a cigerette. Obviously they'd stepped out during the intermission for Kurt to smoke. She stands in shock. Her brain alternating between shit shit shit and Kurt smokes and then she looks amazing before back to shit shit shit
“Oh my gosh” Rachel beams at her “What brings you to New York?!”
Quinn falters as Rachel stops in front of her. What is she meant to say, she's been here for the last four years. She never told Racehl she was going to Colubmia, she barely told anyone.
“Rachel” She opts to just stare at the shorter girl.
“Hey” Cassie appears next to Quinn, pretzel in hand. “Oh Hey” She exclaims as she realises Quinn has come face to face with Rachel Berry.
“Hi I'm Rachel Berry” she shoves her hand towards the other brunette
“I'm Cassie”
“So you're a friend of Quinn's” Rachel asks while beaming at the other girl.
Quinn can see a glint in Cassie's eye, the strange pleasure the girl got hearing people refer to her friend as Quinn.
“Best Friend, roommate, ex-unf” Quinn slaps a hand over Cassies mouth, her best friend loves to stir up trouble, always trying to make Quinn uncomfortable. When it came to her old high school friends Cassie took extra glee in outing as much of Quinns new life as possible.
“Well it's been lovely bumping into you Rachel, but we really must go” Quinn blurts, she glances up to see Kurt watching her with a raised eyebrow. shit shit shit she knows he is piecing things together, probably deducing that the girl who looked like Quinn he'd seen at the clubs actually was Quinn.
“We should get back inside Rachel” Kurt pipes up, stomping out his cigerette.
“Oh hey why don't you guys come join us at this party tonight!” Cassie exclaims and Quinn wants to stab her. “here” she digs in her purse then shoves a business card towards them “I promise a bevvy of attrative young people of varying genders and sexual identities”
Kurt raises an eyebrow and grabs the card.
“Oh how exciting, we'll see you tonight. I can't wait to catch up Quinn” Rachel babbles as Kurt tugs on the her to go back inside. Quinn waves a little then smacks Cassie.
“You bitch” Quinn glowers at her but Cassie just links arms as they head towards home.
