Title: In Another Life 7/?)
Fandom, Pairing: RPF (AU) Demi/Selena (eventually)
Rating: T
Disclaimer: I don't own them and I don't intend to offend, this is just my twisted imagination.
Summary: What happens when I throw Selena and Demi into a cliché high school scenario? Selena is the new girl at a high school strangely populated by AU and OOC Disney teens. Of course Demi is there and naturally this is about them getting together, at some point.
Authors Notes: I'm a kiwi so forgive me for anything grossly inaccurate. Big thanks to we_all_fall as always, this bit doesn't have the benefit of her direct comments but I'm pretty sure my writing has improved because of her.
more notes - Sorry this is a week late. Real life has gotten in the way for both myself and my beta so things have been a bit slow. But I do have notes scribbled down for the new chapters, I just need to find the time to translate them into actual fic.
bonus thanks to mickey1980 because I love my new icons :P

Demi yawns and snuggles into the warmth of the body she is wrapped around. She hasn’t felt this content in a long time and is grateful she didn’t indulge too much at Sterling’s party and can bask in the wonderful morning without any hangover. Demi tightens her grip on the other girl and places a soft kiss against the base of her neck, trailing more along her shoulder until she feels Selena stir from slumber.
“Morning” Selena mumbles sleepily she smiles and presses her lips against Demi’s “I could really get used to waking up like this” They exchange a few soft kisses before Demi’s tongue runs across Selena’s lips seeking entrance and her hands work their way under Selena’s tank top. Selena parts her lips allowing Demi’s tongue entrance, in the back of her mind she can’t help but think she should stop things before they went too far. She adors Demi but isn’t ready to take things to that level so quickly. Suddenly Demi’s stomach lets out a loud rumble and the girls pull apart and giggle.
“I’ll go sort out some breakfast” Selena disentangles herself from the mess of limbs and sheets. She leans over and gives Demi one more kiss before leaving the bedroom and padding down the hall towards the kitchen. When she reaches the kitchen she finds her Mom making waffles.
“Hi Mom!” Selena greets her cheerily. She receives an icy stare in return.
“I’m disappointed in you Selena, we were very specific about the rules” Selena feels her stomach drop through the floor.
“What?” She squeaks out. She’d been honest about the party, about who was there, she wasn’t sure what she had done wrong.
“No girls in your room” Her mother stares at her, one of those unwavering stares parents are good at and make you feel about an inch tall.
“You came in my room?” she felt the colour drain from her face as she thought of how she discovered herself wrapped in Demi’s arms this morning.
“I came to see if you wanted waffles, I’ve made enough for both of you”
“I’m sorry mom, we were at the party and I said she could crash here for the night”
“I take it she’s more than a friend though Selena, and even if she isn’t we don’t know these things. Your father and I were very clear on the rules Selena, no private sleepovers.” Mandy piles two plates with waffles as Selena stares at her feet.

Demi wanders down the hallway sleepily, having dressed in her jeans from last night and a shirt she’s sure Selena won’t mind that she borrowed. She encounters a wonderful smell of cooking wafting towards her so she follows it until she hears voices clearly.
“I know Mom, I’m really sorry, we just slept. Honest.”
“I’ll let it slide this time Selena, I would rather you two come home safely from parties, but in the future your friends can sleep on the couch.”
“Yes Mom”
“Morning” Demi smiles shyly as she enters the kitchen. She feels awkward as Mandy raises an eyebrow at her entrance.
“I’m sorry we haven’t met before.” Mandy looks to her daughter indicating she expects and introduction.
“Um Mom, this is Demi” Selena smiles softly then adds “I guess she’s my girlfriend” She watches Demi shyly for a reaction. Introducing Demi to her mother wasn’t the way she wanted to discuss the exact nature of their relationship. However knew she had to be honest with her mother and it was the best description she had. She watches a smile creep across Demi’s face and knows it is ok, which means it’s true. Inside her head Selena lets out a little squeal of joy that Demi Lovato is now officially her girlfriend. Mandy smiles warmly at Demi.
“It’s nice to meet you finally Demi, Selena has spoken a lot about you.” She looks at her daughter again “I didn’t realize you were actually dating her”
“It’s a new thing” Demi speaks up before reaching for Selena’s hand and giving it a squeeze.
“Well you look after my baby” Mandy hands them each a plate of waffles and ignores Selena as she rolls her eye’s dramatically.
“I will and thank you for breakfast” Demi grins at Selena. Inside her head she is replaying the last few moments. “Um Mom, this is Demi … I guess she’s my girlfriend” she never knew that it would make her so incredibly happy to hear those words. To be introduced as the girlfriend, to a parent no less.

Dallas knocks on the door to the Cyrus residence as she juggles coffees in her hand. The door creeks open and Dallas scowls.
“Hey Dallas” Trace greets her with a lecherous grin.
“Hi Trace. Is Miley around I wanted to talk to her” She tries to ignore the way his eyes rake over her body.
“Yea she’s somewhere” He turns and glances inside then smiles at her “You know Dallas my band are playing in town tonight, maybe you could come along, just like the old days” He winks.
“No thanks Trace” She smiles politely and wishes he would step aside so she could take her peace offering to Miley.
“Come on D, we were so good together” He reaches and arm out to try and make contact but she takes a quick step back.
“Don’t Trace” She shakes her head “We’re long over, and you know why” she bites out the last words.
“Come on Dallas, ancient history, that is all way behind me” He smiles at her, there is a sadness she sees behind the smile and Dallas knows he is not completely over it all.
“Trace?” Miley suddenly appears. “Dallas!” She shoves her brother aside and pulls the cheer captain inside. “I’m sorry about him, oh coffee!” She pulls Dallas through to the living room and takes the coffee Dallas passes her. Miley takes one sip and lets out a satisfied sigh. “Perfect, you really know what a girl wants” Miley plops down on the couch and takes another long sip of coffee.
“I just wanted to apologise for last night” Dallas nervously sits down and fidgets with her own takeout coffee.
“It’s ok” Miley shakes her head “I should apologise also, I was out of line.”
“I still had no right to be so horrible about it Miley, you and Demi have a history and I should have understood. I’ve just been so frustrated watching Demi and Selena mope around about each other, the idea that you were keeping them apart just made me so angry.”
“I guess all the vodka Trace was feeding us didn’t help” Dallas shakes her head
“No I guess not”
“I was out of line too Dallas, I was just so hurt that Demi had found someone else and I thought I saw a way to keep them apart. Selena is so sweet and wonderful and I just thought how much it would kill me to have to watch them be together. I’m friends with them and I was just thinking how much it would have sucked to watch. It was selfish but I just wanted to keep them apart so I could keep them each to myself.”
“I just don’t get it Miley” Dallas had been wondering for awhile now why Miley had been trying to keep them apart. “I know Demi was the first girl you ever dated”
“The only” Miley reminded her “Not that I wouldn’t again, but you know.”
“Yea I know, I just thought things were good, you and Demi were starting to be friends again for awhile. Until you and Nick broke up and she took his side”
Miley stares at Dallas “That’s what you think happened?”
Dallas frows “Isn’t it?”
“Dallas, I “ Miley suddenly stops talking, she stares at her drink and then gulps down the last of it. It effectively gives her time to think over what she was going to say. She thinks she should have just let Dallas believe it was the breakup with Nick that saw the friendship slide again.
“Miley, what happened?” Dallas asks, concern evident in her voice.
“I don’t know if I should tell you, Demi wouldn’t be happy” Miley shakes her head.
“Have you told anyone?” Dallas asks, she can see the younger girl is carrying something that is hurting her deeply. Since it’s about Demi Dallas knows there aren’t many people she would turn to for support about it.
“No” Miley whispers and suddenly seems to be on the verge of tears.
Dallas places an arm over her shoulders “I won’t tell Demi a thing, just let it out Miley”
Tears prick at Miley’s eyes as she starts to tell Dallas the story.
“You know most of what happened with me and Demi, when we got together and how I dumped her because I didn’t like being called gay. I really liked her but I had just made cheerleader and I was so scared of being different then. It was easier this year when you took over” She flashes a grateful smile at Dallas “I think I also grew up a lot and I became more comfortable. I was with Nick then and I was happy with him. Demi and I started to patch things up, but I knew I had really hurt her and it would be tough. It was good having my friend back again. Then after Nick and I broke up, well Demi and I started sleeping together again. I thought it meant more, I thought she still loved me and it meant we were getting back together.” Miley wipes away a tear that has spilled down her cheek “I felt like such an idiot when she had to explain to me that she didn’t feel like that any more. That it was just sex for her” Miley felt Dallas pull her into a tight hug “She didn’t mean to hurt me and it was my own fault. I guess I understand now what I put her through when we broke up. Then Selena came along and I saw the way Demi looked at her. I wished she still looked at me like that.” Miley let out a sigh and pressed her face against Dallas who just hugged the younger girl as she sobbed a little, letting out frustrations she’d been keeping bottled up.
“It’s ok Miley, you just need to move on, I’m sure you’ll meet someone else.”
Miley nods and pulls back. “Thanks for listening Dallas, I never really realized how much it was really eating me up inside because I had never told anyone.” Miley shook her head a little, she felt a bit foolish about the whole situation but better that finally someone else knew.
“It’s ok, I understand your behaviour a bit better. I thought you were just being a bitch. You dumped Demi so I thought it was terrible to tell Selena she was off limits. I had no idea anything had happened between you since then.”
Miley nods “See not such a crazy bitch. Besides I am happy for them, I’m glad Selena didn’t listen to me after all.”
“They are really cute together.” Dallas and Miley both share a smile. Miley fidgets with her empty cup a little. She knows her and Demi are nothing but history now and she is honestly happy for her and Selena. They sit in silence for a few moments before Miley speaks again.
“How are things with Kevin?”
Dallas shrugs “Honestly things are a bit awkward, sometimes I feel like I can’t do anything right”
Miley nods “It used to feel like that with Nick sometimes, I know I put pressure on him that I shouldn’t have. But sometimes I felt like he really looked down on me because I wasn’t still a virgin”
Dallas nods then asks “Does he know about you and Demi? I mean everyone talked about it, but did you tell him it was true?”
Miley shrugs “We never talked about it. I think he knows it’s true. He knows Demi so well I think he knows it did happen”
Dallas sighs and finishes off her coffee “I worry about Kevin. Sometimes I feel like he is blindly following his father’s wishes instead of his own. I think if he really thought I was so bad he’d just dump me”
“Like Nick dumped me?” Miley asks
“Sorry, I didn’t mean-”
“I know up didn’t. It’s just that Nick said to me we were over because I wanted a sexual relationship and he didn’t. I thought maybe Kevin has the same idea.”
“The thing is Miles, I really like that Kevin doesn’t want sex. I never put any pressure on him for it.” She takes a deep breath “After Trace it’s been a relief to be with someone who really wants to be with me, and it’s not about sex or some ego thing. It’s just me. I think that’s why it hurts more when he gives me those disapproving looks or lectures when I drink, or when I mess up in some way”
“Because you think he’s the only boy who ever really loved you for actually being you?” Miley shakes her head “It’s not true Dallas, I’m sure it’s not. Don’t let my fuckhead brother make you feel like you’re not worth it as your own person.”
Dallas smiles at Miley “Don’t worry. It’s not all about Trace. I just really love Kevin and sometimes I worry he just doesn’t feel the same way.”
