The Doctor doesn’t sleep, but John does, often slumped over his desk, ink on his fingers, cufflink pressing a red mark into his cheek.
Martha creeps quietly inside. If he’s gone to bed, she leaves, just as softly. If not then she goes to him and lets him half-awaken by her presence. Gently, soothingly, she coaxes him out of his jacket and shirt, over to his bed, under his covers. She pulls off his shoes and lines them up under his bed. Then she allows herself, briefly, to smooth his hair and press the softest of kisses onto his forehead.
