Route 66 Suggestions??

My sisters and I are going to be taking a road trip along the whole breadth of Route 66 - from Chicago to Santa Monica the second week of July.  I'm still working on the details, and I thought maybe some of you out there could help me!  Anyone done a stretch on Route 66?  Thoughts?  Suggestions?  Pitfalls to avoid?  Sites not to miss?  I'd love any ( Read more... )

For starters, head to www.route66guidebooks.com to check out the guidebooks. Don't pick one, but pick several. Trust me, you'll need them. 66 is not officially on the maps anymore, but over 85% is still driveable, and that's probably closer to 90-95%.

Allow a lot of time, and don't make plans. You think it's going to take a week? Allow two! You think it's an 11-day trip? Allow 22. Trust me, I've driven the entire length twice and it's still not enough time. As for plans, see the above. If you have a reservation in Barstow because you thought that the Mojave Desert was going to be boring, and you find yourself in Kingman Arizona at 3pm, you aren't going to be happen stretching it to Barstow just to make a reservation. So don't make them, except for maybe the bigger cities a night or two in advance, just in case.

Speaking of the bigger cities, don't ignore them, but watch out for where you are. I live in Los Angeles, and I routinely direct people to follow ALL of 66 in LA County. Why? Because as long as you know where you are and pay attention to what is around you, 66 during the day in LA is pretty safe. At night, well, there are a couple of places I'd recommend you be aware of, but I still personally drive those places at night with my windows down and my doors unlocked. It's all about your comfort level.

Lastly, head to yahoogroups and search for "Route 66." There's a group with over 1000 members there. Join it and lurk. Ignore the chit-chat and look for worthwhile material. Search the archives, databases, and files. There are plenty of wortwhile notes in there. And drop me a personal email and I'll fill you in on more if you need it.
