Pet Peeve: American Idol

Mar 20, 2007 12:39

I know, I know.  EVERYONE watches American Idol.  I would be lying if I said I didn't watch it too, sometimes.  However, if I could watch something else, I would.  And this is my pet peeve with American Idol.  For several months, mid-season, this ... phenomenon arrives and completely takes over the television.  First, the several-days-per-week gore fest of watching hearts broken in the auditions.  Then, because there are so many contestants, the what-feels-like-seven-days-a-week-but-is-actually-only-three-I-think hijacking of prime time.

Even shows NOT on the same network bail.  All of a sudden you can't BUY a new episode of anything.  It is a television drought.  Even worse, the little bones we, as a viewing audience, are thrown.  Here: one new episode of House.  We're not even telling you when the next one will be on.  Because we'd much rather you tune in and get sucked into American Idol, wouldn't we?

I think I'm just bitter.  I miss Heroes.  And even, a little, Veronica Mars.  I miss House.  I am gradually losing all interest in Prison Break (I know I'm in trouble because I've only half paid attention the last two weeks.  I'm sorry, I find the endlessness of this escape, well, BORING.  And I don't really care about the characters.  There are only a couple of episodes left this season, and then I think I might be done.  I'll catch up on the internet later.)  The last new episode of The Office seems like an eon ago, and this whole we-put-up-things-on-the-website-isn't-that-cool, oh-but-you're-CANADIAN-none-for-you! business is irritating as hell.

Huh.  I think I'm over TV.  I think I'm going to cancel my cable.  Huh.

Oh well, one good thing: all this crap tv has meant more READING yay.

Book #18 Love Walked In by Marisa de los Santos.  Another recommendation of
shanna_s.  The amount that I loved this book can't be measured.  I loved every moment, every word.  The author has the most gorgeous way with words, and yet ... I felt completely and utterly connected to the characters.  I expect this is a book already optioned, because I could absolutely SEE the film version in my head ;)  I borrowed this from the library, but will definitely be picking up my own copy.
