Last week's episode would have made a good finale. This was… an extra episode to set up next season.
Weirdly, although so many of the characters were in Big Trouble, I didn't buy the dramatic tension in this episode.
- It's not like they're going to write Somerhalder out of the show, so it was no surprise that they found a cure for Damon.
- Klaus's drinking challenge to Stefan was faintly ridiculous. I laughed at it, instead of with it.
- Klaus and Elijah's issues leave me cold.
- Not enough Caroline, despite her mother playing a critical (ha ha!) role in the episode.
- Jeremy is cute as a button, but narratively unuseful. For most of the season, he's been a damsel-in-distress. But you know -- He Sees Dead Girlfriends. All. The. Time.
If the season had ended with last week's episode, I would have been jazzed about next season. Now… not so much.
ETA: Damon walking through the palimpsest of his memories and the screening of Gone with the Wind was brilliant.
