It is one in the morning and my nose is dripping and my head is stuffy so I'm probably crazy, but I ran across this quote again just now and I started thinking about it and contemplating my thesis and I had this thought:

"Fanfiction is a way of the culture repairing the damage done in a system where contemporary myths are owned by corporations ( Read more... )

1. WIN. Best thing I've read all day.

2. #OccupyMythology seriously needs to be written. Like, a fic or something. Fic about ficcers who write fic. It's an infinite loop!

Eternal meta. Oh man, now I kind of want to write that. I am very much in the mood to write about fandom today.

I have literally spent the last thirty minutes being attacked by ideas for this. HELP. If you don't do it I probably will, and then it'll be really fucking long and then where will we be - in meta nirvana, possibly.

SO MANY IDEAS.

There's a bunch of freaks in costume in the lobby of the Maarten Publishing headquarters across the street. This isn’t #OccupyMythology, is it?

If I have just started a new movement I will be forever in lulz.

And then all the fans in the world cosplay the fuck up and #OccupyEverything. Yesssssssssssssss.

And at some point someone on LJ posts a roundup of the links that are being posted everywhere, and word gets 'round, and people start realizing that in London people are dressing up in bowties and tweed jackets and, like, blue dresses with windows, and lobbying in the BBC headquarters with #OccupyTARDIS signs, and a bunch of guys&girls are gathering up rocking deerstalkers and crisp Victorian suits and pink phones @ #OccupyBakerStreet, and J.K. Rowling is already getting #OccupyHogwarts emails from all over the world and especially the theme park because oh my god. #OccupyTumblr is crashing the servers, and people are writing freeform fic in chalk on the pavements in London and there are Greek Mythology gods in the New York subway, and at one point I'm pretty sure Facebook gets hacked and everybody's statuses are changed to ALL YOUR BASES ARE BELONG TO ME ( ... )

Oh man this could be so awesome. I am all for making this a verse. I may also be writing a totally serious #OccupyMythology manifesto.

Two - no, wait, three things:

1. I am totally shipping Lynn/Julia from upthread. I have no idea who they are or whether or not they actually exist or you made them up, but they have backstories. In my head. They're uni roommates in love! there are Starbucks soy lattes. And Pablo Neruda.

2. Manifestoooooooo. ♥ I am sort of writing part of the links round-up LJ post I mentioned up there, trying to figure out how memes would translate IRL. /meta has swallowed me.

3. Also: Fan fiction is what literature might look like if it were reinvented from scratch after a nuclear apocalypse by a band of brilliant pop-culture junkies trapped in a sealed bunker. They don't do it for money. That's not what it's about. The writers write it and put it up online just for the satisfaction. They're fans, but they're not silent, couchbound consumers of media. The culture talks to them, and they talk back to the culture in its own language."

This is SO AWESOME. I have so many tabs open right now with research.

1. YESSSSSS. I love the way this is both a totally serious thing and a fic and shipping and fun.

2. Wooooooo meta.

3. I love that article! Maybe I will have to include it in my manifesto.
