I was discussing HitsuHina and somehow ended up babbling about Hinamori. Some fans dislike this pairing, I assume, because of Hinamori more than Hitsugaya. Plus, Matsumoto WAS always a more amusing person. Personally, I thought Hitsugaya deserved someone better, who was willing to believe in him, and stand by him. Eventually I changed my mind somewhat, about Hinamori.
Pre-Shinigami Days: Her devotion to Aizen is pretty understandable, I think. He was the kind but strong type of person who she believed, should hold such a great position. Having goals, like wanting to be like him, and working under him, is normal. Everyone has that kind of wish, even if they don't do anything about it. She's quite passive, unless provoked, which tends to cause her to be labeled as a less interesting character than others. ← I sort of assumed this a bit, instead of suggesting that it's because she's a minor character. Hitsugaya is another minor character, but he ranked top-ish in the last poll. But anyway. In the drama, Hitsugaya was picked on for being a kid. Rather than trying to support Hitsugaya's wish to go to Shinigami school (for her sake, no less-- although she doesn't know that, I believe), she tries to encourage Hitsugaya to back off. A lot of people would not back down, pride is important. But a lot of other people WOULD back down. Rather smoosh pride than be smooshed. For the moment at least. Hinamori is one of those people. She doesn't want to see Hitsugaya get hurt. He is someone whom she likes very much, and visited frequently. The bullies are more or less, sempai, which suggest some kind of respect. Hinamori obviously honours that, and feels it's her role to tell Hitsugaya (who is younger than her), to step back as well.
Shinigami Days: Coming to Aizen's "murder," we see a distraught Hinamori. Earlier, Hitsugaya foreshadows by warning her to watch out for Gin. Just after she speaks to Aizen, telling him how much of a comfort he is to her, and how much she admires him, she falling asleep in his room. When she wakes up, she leaves, and finds his dead body. He had been murdered. Understandably, she is frightened, angry, and upset. Since fighting Gin only caused her to be caged up temporarily (for her own safety), she was probably going over a hundred possibly events that could have taken place. After learning, from Aizen's own writing, that Hitsugaya was responsible for his murder, she escapes to find him.
This is one of those things that I came to understand a bit better; Hinamori had a lot mixed feelings about everything that was going on, surrounding Rukia's execution. Things weren't safe. Hinamori trusted Aizen and felt that despite everything going on, as long as he was with her, everything would be OK. Hinamori felt safe with Aizen, not Hitsugaya. After seeing Hitsugaya named as the murderer, in Aizen's own writing, she obviously became more conflicted on doing "the right thing," which was getting revenge. Hinamori wanted to be Aizen's subordinate all her life. As a subordinate, Hinamori was required to support Aizen, no matter what. As evident with Kira's interception of Hinamori's fight vs Gin, just after Aizen's death, a subordinate's duty is to protect and serve his or her captain. No matter how she feels towards Hitsugaya, Aizen comes first, professionally.
Hinamori vs Hitsugaya: There's not much to say, really. I'm sure they rather not fight each other. I don't have the chapters on hand with me at the moment, but Hinamori must have been exhausted, emotionally. Having to fight Hitsugaya, one of her most important friend, probably took everything she had. After receiving such a strong bow from Hitsugaya, it must have been a relief to be able to stop. This part is a bit garbbled since I don't have manga, and I can't recall the order of how this happened. Gin tells Hinamori to follow him, and she sees Aizen alive. Her emotions must have sky rocketed at this point. Aizen is alive, and that's all that really matters. Except, then he tries to kill her. The only person she ever admire and revered to such extent, wants her dead. Poor Hinamori... In the manga, Hinamori took a long time to recuperate. Hitsugaya sneaked in visits between work to see if she improved. The next time we see her, she (more or less) appears to be back to her normal self. Although we're not told directly, I think that she choose to stay in bed. She was confused about who to believe, after learning the truth about Aizen. And she must have realized that Hitsugaya was right all along.
I think, at the back of her mind, she always held a "fantasy" version of Aizen. Not sure if that's the proper term, but what I mean is, even after all that Aizen did, she still tried to hold onto the image of his innocence. And that Gin was behind the crime. ← Acknowledging that Hitsugaya was partially right. Technically, after having followed him so many years, she must have felt that she "knew" him, in a sense. He was her idol, in a way. It's hard to think of someone so good, as being bad. No matter how much evidence is racked up against Aizen, it's not easy for someone like Hinamori to turn her beliefs around 180 degrees, and go along with the crowd. And she was hospitalized most of the time Aizen was doing his evil stuff, so they only barely affected her. Admitting his wrong doings would be giving up everything she ever believed in.
And in that way... I convinced myself Hinamori was better than I thought. (e.e) I would love to babble more about HitsuHina someday, when I have something to talk about.
