So, I was in the parking lot outside of Chili's in West Springfield, behind a putz in a shiny red BMW 330xi. He was stopped in the double-wide exit lane, and kept going in and out of reverse, and his left blinker was on. After about 30 seconds of watching this man not make up his mind (and his wife apparently gesticulate that he's being stupid), I decided to use the right side of the lane to pass him.
Just as I pulled along side him, he decided to look left (since that's where his blinkers were indicating he should be going), and then turn right. "Right" is where my driver's side door happened to be at the time.
So, now I'm looking at my door, which no longer opens more than about 7 inches (good thing I'm flexible, athletic, and skinny), and remembering that a new door skin, new fender (which also go banged up), paint, and work came to about $1,400 the last time this happened (also in a parking lot, about 4 years ago... slightly different circumstances).
According to the Kelly Blue Book, my car is worth at most about $1,800. So, there's a pretty real fear in my mind that this stupid body damage is going to total my car.
