I'm mostly on top of comment replies and ... not completely out of touch with the flist, so I'd better get this out of the way before the ever downward slide of falling behind starts getting worse again, lol.
Holiday Wishes Meme
Step One
Make a post (public, friends-locked, filtered...whatever you're comfortable with) to your LJ. The post should contain your list of 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fandom-related ("I'd love a Snape/Hermione icon that's just for me.") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD.") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV.") The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.
If you wish for real life things (not stories or icons), make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you.
Also, make sure you post some version of these guidelines in your LJ so that the holiday joy will spread.
Step Two
Surf around your friends list (or friends friends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now here's the important part:
If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use - or even know where you could get someone's dream purebred Basset Hound for free - do it.
You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf - to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not - it's your call.
There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.
1. S/B and Clois fic (or art!) is always welcome, but if anyone would be willing to give a crack at the following (again, fic or art X) ), I'd be delighted! --> Superman for all Seasons or movie Clana, Clark/Lori Lemaris, Clark+Kara Zor-El, Clark+Pete Ross, anything involving the El family back on Krypton, anything involving the Batclan hanging out, and Wally/Kyle.
2. Biology, virology, or general science related icons, because pretty icons make everything better--even work! ^-^
3. A beta. Or someone who will read through my fic and tell me what parts bore them so that I know what to cut out before posting, lol. I don't know if this really belongs on an Xmas wishlist, since it's more of a long-term commitment thing ... I feel like I'm asking Santa Claus to bring me a significant other, lol. But, uh, there you go! ;)
4. Music! Or music recs!
5. Someone to hold my hand when I attempt to change my layout to
this one. I know there are instructions at
premade_ljs on how to do it, but I am a wimp when it comes to CSS, and would like to know that someone knowledgeable is in my corner before going head to head with it, lol.
6. To be a better friend to both my RL and internet friends, and to be a better human being to strangers.
7. An ankh necklace like the one
Death has. I used to have one and lost it. :(
8. Time management skills! Or, in lieu of that, Hermione's time turner. ^-^
9. To meet people on the flist, or for the flist to meet up, or both!
10. For everyone to find peace, happiness, and fulfillment in life.
Also, since I keep stealing everyone's music, here are some songs! Despite all of the wonderful advice I received, I still haven't de-protected my music because I am the Laziest Person on Earth. Luckily, my lab has a random collection of CDs, so here are some of the songs from said collection that I like. :)
1.
No Cheap Thrill by Suzanne Vega. Suzanne Vega is one of my favorite musicians, one of those singer/songwriters who not only writes catchy melodies, but whose lyrics are inventive, and could almost stand on their own as poems. As for this song, the sense of competition as, um, foreplay (and implied identity porn) makes it a total S/B song for me. ;) But in general, it's about poker, and that = awesome.
Ante up. And don't be shy.
Who is that man who is catching my eye?
What's underneath all of the deadpan face?
Sitting so pretty with a criminal grace?
Lamebrain Pete wants to Spit in the Sea.
He's got a cool hand but it isn't for me.
Butcher Boy thinks he'll be splitting the pot.
But I've seen what he's got and it isn't a lot.
(When deuces are wild you can follow the queen.
I'd go too except I know where she's been.)
I'll see you, I'll call you, I'll raise you
But it's no cheap thrill
It will cost you, cost you, cost you
Anything you have to pay.
I limit the straddles, and you shuffle and deal.
When will the dealer reveal how he feels?
Is the lucky beginner just a five-card stud?
Is this winning streak going to be nipped in the bud?
I'll see you, I'll call you, I'll raise you
But it's no cheap thrill
It will cost you, cost you, cost you
Anything you have to pay.

But it's no cheap thrill

World Before Columbus by Suzanne Vega. Another Suzanne song! I don't associate this with a pairing, but it's one of my favorite love songs. I was always iffy about sharing it, thinking "what if some people are offended by historically inaccurate and Eurocentric metaphors involving Christopher Columbus?" LOL. But, whatever, it's pretty!
If your love were taken from me
Every color would be black and white
It would be as flat as the world before Columbus
That's the day that I lose half my sight
If your life were taken from me
All the trees would freeze in this cold ground
It would be as cruel as the world before Columbus
Sail to the edge and I'd be there looking down
Those men who lust for land
And for riches strange and new
Who love those trinkets of desire
Oh they never will have you
And they'll never know the gold
Or the copper in your hair
How could they weigh the worth
Of you so rare
If your love were taken from me
Every light that's bright would soon go dim
It would be as dark as the world before Columbus
Down the waterfall and I'd swim over the brim
Those men who lust for land
And for riches strange and new
Who love those trinkets of desire
Oh they will never have you
And they'll never know the gold
Or the copper in your hair
How could they weigh the worth
Of you so rare

Do What You Have to Do by Sarah McLachlan. Hey, it's not my fault my lab has lots of chick rock. =P This used to be my Buffy/Angel song, but now it's my all-purpose unrequited/doomed love song (actually, it would make a great Clex or Bruce/Harvey song now that I think about it). It's terribly bleak and angsty and foreboding, even, and I adore it. ^-^
What ravages of spirit
Conjured this temptuous rage
Created you a monster
Broken by the rules of love
And fate has led you through it
You do what you have to do
And fate has led you through it
You do what you have to do
And I have the sense to recognize that
I don't know how to let you go
Every moment marked
With apparitions of your soul
I'm ever swiftly moving
Trying to escape this desire
The yearning to be near you
I do what I have to do
The yearning to be near you
I do what I have to do
But I have the sense to recognize
That I don't know how
To let you go
I don't know how
To let you go
A glowing ember
Burning hot
Burning slow
Deep within I'm shaken by the violence
Of existing for only you
I know I can't be with you
I do what I have to do
I know I can't be with you
I do what I have to do
And I have sense to recognize but
I don't know how to let you go
I don't know how to let you go
I don't know how to let you go
And finally ...

This Picture by Placebo. I get the impression that, if the flist were to combine forces, we would produce a complete Placebo anthology. But in case there's someone who doesn't have every Placebo song in existence already, here is one of their more upbeat (well, upbeat sounding ;p) pieces that's just kind of fun to listen to. *grin*
I hold an image of the ashtray girl
Of cigarette burns on my chest
I wrote a poem that described her world
And put our friendship to the test
And late at night
Whilst on all fours
She used to watch me kiss the floor
What's wrong with this picture?
What's wrong with this picture?
Farewell the ashtray girl
Forbidden snowflake
Beware this troubled world
Watch out for earthquakes
Goodbye to open sores
To broken semaphore
You know we miss her
We miss her picture
Sometimes it's fated
(We) Disintegrated it
For fear of growing old
Sometimes it's fated
(We) Assassinated it
For fear of growing old
Farewell the ashtray girl
Angelic fruitcake
Beware this troubled world
Control your intake
Goodbye to open sores
Goodbye and furthermore
You know we miss her
We miss her picture
Sometimes it's fated
(We) Disintegrated it
For fear of growing old
Sometimes it's fated
(We) Assassinated it
For fear of growing old
Hang on
Though we try
It's gone
Hang on
Though we try
It's gone
Sometimes it's fated
(We) Disintegrated it
For fear of growing old
Sometimes it's fated
(We) Assassinated it
For fear of growing old
Can't stop growing old...
Annnddd ... there shall be more to come once I unpack my own CDs! :D
