Memorial Day

May 30, 2011 00:13

Hi, y'all

I know that it has been a while since I posted an entry to my LJ, but I couldn't let this day pass by without saying THANK YOU to the men and women of our armed forces. THANK YOU to all who have served in uniform, but especially for those as President Lincoln so aptly stated in his Gettysburg Address, "...who gave the last full measure of devotion" by sacrificing their lives so the rest of us could sleep under free and safe skies. I am eternally GRATEFUL to each of you.

I've decided to post two songs that symbolize this day for me. One is Johnny Cash's "Ragged Old Flag" and the other is Trace Adkins' "Arlington". If you have a moment amidst the picnics, fireworks, and BBQs tomorrow please take a little time to listen to these poignant pieces of music and say your own thanks to our service members.

Lastly, the icon that I've chosen for this post is a pic of my current favorite fictional military officer, Lt. Commander Steve McGarrett from the new Hawaii 5-0. This character embodies the traits of our REAL military personnel, and the ship behind him is the U.S.S. Missouri. This ship is now a museum ship in Pearl Harbor, but before that she had a long history of service that began in WWII and ended after the first Gulf War. This famed battleship fought in engagements from Iwo Jima to Korea to Iraq, but her most famous moment was when she became the site for General Douglas MacArthur accepting Japan's surrender to allied powers on September 2, 1945 ending WWII. The Missouri fired her guns for the last time on December 7, 1991 to mark the 50th anniversary of the battle at Pearl Harbor, and then, she docked there to begin her final campaign--teaching others about those that served aboard her.

A pic of the "Mighty Mo' and her infamous 16 inch guns.
