inkingitout 2023 - WORD GOAL: 120000 - FINAL COUNT: 66755
Well, I didn't reach my goal but I did manage to get 66755 WORDS written despite having a year that sucked a lot of the enthusiasm out of me for one reason or another. A month or so ago I made a secondary goal to reach at least 50% of the word count and I managed that with 55.63% thanks to these final works :) I have signed up again for 2024 with a less ambitious goal of the minimum 75k words.

lands_of_magic Round 12
CH20 was a quick 'choose a gift' for points game. I've been working on the Christmas Stockings and filled all of them so far - EIGHT. There are FIFTY members of the landcomm and still 5 days remaining so I really hope there isn't a sudden rush of stockings as I won't have much time to create anything for them. Weirdly the stockings are NOT screened and up until yesterday I was the only one who had left anything. I will still wait until JAN 6 before posting all the graphics I have created.

BOOKS/FAN STUFF **** POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT ****
FANFICTION: Been dipping in on new works created over Christmas for both current and older fandoms :)
BOOKS: I have not yet started Surviving the Evacuation Part 9: Ireland by Frank Tayell.

MOVIES and FANVIDS **** POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT ****
I've decided to put anything I watch under a cut so no-one gets unintentionally spoiled, plus it means I can be more open about what I viewed :)
MOVIES: I was on a small 'alien invasion' marathon this Christmas :)
Battle: Los Angeles: I like re-watching this apocalypse movie as it has some great action sequences while still focusing on individuals/characters. It's a war movie but with a difference as they have to battle aliens. Los Angeles looks like a war zone with the dead left where they fell. All the rubble and destruction, the abandoned cars add atmosphere to the movie. This is happening all around the world as the aliens co-ordinated an attack on all the major countries to get a foothold in every continent and set up a beach-head - text-book invasion tactics. The small group of marines are sent to save civilians caught behind enemy lines and bring them to safety before bombs are dropped. This the story of that rescue attempt and how it leads them to discover the 'hiding place' of the alien control center and bring it down to disable all the alien drones, giving them a chance to bring the fight back to the aliens.
Edge of Tomorrow (Live Die Repeat): Fantastic premise to this movie of an alien that can manipulate time to live over the same day so eventually it cannot lose the war and can take over the entire planet. Humanity has one last chance when a cowardly media 'soldier' is forced into that final battle and ends up with the alien's ability to reset each day after killing an alpha alien and getting its blood all over him. Although we see only a few of those loops I have to wonder at how many times he saw that same day, saw the same people killed, people who did not know him at all but he had come to know so well. How many times had he reached the farmhouse and watched Rita die? And in the end no one but Rita and the scientist will know that he had won the war for humanity.
Independence Day: Another movie where the aliens knew exactly how to strike. Co-ordinated attacks on every major population center or military position to wipe out as many as quickly as possible and weaken any military counter-attack, and once the major targets have been eliminated then they would send in ground troops to mop up the rest. Fortunately they never got a chance to deploy thousands of ground troops as the mothership was destroyed. I still fast forward through most of the too patriotic scenes and those with Russell Casse (Randy Quaid) - except for that final moment where he stops being a buffoon and sacrifices himself to destroy the primary weapon. I love all the snark from Hiller and Levinson, especially on the space craft. I adore Jasmine and how she gave President Whitmore a chance to see his dying wife one last time. I may have to re-watch the sequel as I liked Okun and Isaacs too and they have bigger roles in the next movie.
Death on the Nile: I had been meaning to pick up this movie as I really enjoyed Brannagh's Poirot in Murder on the Orient Express. It was on a 'deal' on Amazon Prime so 'N' and I bought and watched it. It was just as good as the first movie with a superb cast and fantastic scenery in Egypt. I have seen previous versions but couldn't recall whodunnit... except subconsciously I must have recalled enough as I figured it out correctly :)
A Haunting in Venice: A friend gave me an Amazon Prime gift token and I decided to buy the 3rd movie to stream. Very atmospheric with this 'haunted' palazzo with a tragic past that looks as if it is slowly crumbling into the sea. Venice itself looks lovely and ancient and is on my bucket list for if I can ever afford it! I hear Venice is a little dirty and smelly though :) The story line is very good and I liked the way the movie slowly pieced together all the clues - some of which I had missed until they were re-capped by Poirot. It was pretty sad/tragic overall, even for Poirot, although it brought him back out of retirement in time to save another life! Again, a great cast and well acted throughout.
FANVIDS: Nothing this week

TV SHOWS **** POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT ****
Beyond Paradise: The Christmas special was really sweet overall and I love how everything was connected and it ended on a happy note. I liked the idea of this guy wanting to repent for past 'mistakes' by giving back what he had stolen out of desperation 25 years earlier. He knew he was dying and just wanted to leave this life with no regrets. I can see Humphrey and Martha becoming foster parents!
Call the Midwife: It was a lovely Christmas Special overall with lots of small drama that all worked out well in the end. I felt so sorry for the guy living in those terrible conditions who was obviously suffering from PTSD to the point where he wouldn't ask for the help he needed. Glad they were able to help him to some place better where he would be comfortable and helped to overcome his terrible memories of the war.
Death in Paradise: A lovely Christmas Special - with a murder of course. I love how the boyfriend/fiance, who had let her down by not wanting to go to Saint Marie for Christmas as he hated the heat, realized how much he loved his fiancee and came looking for her when she was reported missing, putting himself in the hospital from sunstroke/heat exhaustion. Love that they 'made up' and THEN she tells him that the old vase - probably bequeathed from some aunt - was worth 6 million! It took me a while to recognize the son of the murder victim - he was one of the leads in Shadow and Bone!
Doctor Who Special: We watched the specials with David Tennant and really enjoyed all three, especially the binary/non-binary. The middle one - Wild Blue Yonder - was pretty creepy, especially when he grabbed the wrong Donna! Loved how the 'mistake' he made with the salt led to the 3rd episode. Also, although others will disagree, I loved the idea of bi-generation so now we have TWO Doctors as I was really happy to have the 10th doctor back - or is he now the 14th too :) I know a few people will be skeptical and say they kept his Doctor so that he could be used in specials or to boost ratings if people don't like Ncuti.
I also saw the Christmas Special - Ncuti Gatwa adds a lot of fresh energy to the character and I love him as the new doctor, though he needs to choose an accent and stick with it, but otherwise I wasn't as keen on the episode itself. It 'jumped the shark' with the goblin singing bit on the ship making it more like a Jim Henson creature movie - Labyrinth. It could have been really creepy - on par with the Faeries in the Torchwood episode 'Small Worlds' - but instead left me with feeling and thinking WTF? However, this is a Christmas Special and maybe they were aiming more at the kids in this one.
Fellow Travelers: Going to binge watch this at a later date
