Fic In A Box is a 10k challenge where you have the option to split your 10k into anything between 1-10 works as long as it all adds up to 10k. If anyone is interested in taking a look, there are PINCH HITS needed for various fandoms and with various fic lengths starting at 1k. Just go to the DW community (link above) to see the posts.

lands_of_magic Round 12

I managed to do the FANMIX challenge. Such a tough one for me as I am useless at finding songs. Challenge 09 sounds horrible so I won't tackle that one right now. It has a lot of parts to it but basically wants you to create and promote your own TV show.

smallfandombang 2023/24 - SIGN UP: DONE

10k fic challenge in a SMALL FANDOM. I have signed up for this again as I have managed to complete a story most years. The hardest part was deciding what small fandom I should write in this time around. I have a few that appeal but it is finding inspiration that is the issue at the moment. So for now I have chosen: The Yin-Yang Masters: Dream of Eternity, Terra Nova, and A Gifted Man as options. That may change! If I feel up to it I might sign up as an artist but it does depend on what fandoms will be available.

WEBSITES:
Most of the following will have to wait until I make the time to think it all through:

1. Scan/Upload clippings and other articles:
2. Reduce the overall number of files:

3. Sort out the eFiction archives:

I received a message on Tuesday at the worst possible time, when I had no PC access, that the Michael Biehn eFiction archive had maleware. I managed to use my old Amazon Fire and a bluetooth keyboard - it was horrendous - to go check it out. NOTHING. I virus checked the whole archive using the webhost's tools and then ran about a dozen stories/urls, including for the stories mentioned, in an online Maleware (safe site) detector. NO MALEWARE. The problem is the eFiction software is so old that it is no longer secure against phishing attacks and this is what the maleware software programs are picking up. Phishing is not really an issue on my website as I don't ask readers for any information - no names, no passwords, no bank account details (*grin*). The only phishing could come from what is already loaded on the site for the authors - name and contact emails - but see 'steps previously taken' below.

Now, I have mentioned before that one of my tasks, currently on hold until I have more time, is to sort out the eFiction archives, and by that I mean get everything moved to a shiny new, more secure location such as AO3 because eFiction software has not been updated in about 10 years now. This has given me the kick up the ass I needed to hunt through AO3 to find out if they can help. I sent a message today and will have to wait for the 'committee' to take a look and make a decision. If they decide against then I will have to look into other options.

Steps previously taken:
1. contact all the authors - but most likely their email accounts no longer work as it has been up to 20 years since those accounts were set up, and the archive has been closed for new authors/submissions for at least 5 years and I removed all the non-author accounts years ago too and stopped any new accounts from being set up due to spammers.
2. contacting the few authors that have AO3 accounts - no luck. No one came back other than ME! I moved all of my stories to AO3 some years ago and removed them from the MB/EC and NL archives. MY stories are all easily accessible through the Michael Biehn, Eric Close and Nick Lea AO3 Fiction and Art collections on AO3 (see links below)
3. I tried uploading some of those few AO3 authors stories with me as a co-author with the intention of removing my name as co-author afterwards - but AO3 would not let me as I suspect the majority of accounts have the default for 'co-author allowed' set to NO.

Options:
1. Ask AO3 to import all the stories using their special online archive team - I sent the request on Wed (18 Oct)

The final two options defeat the purpose of moving the stories, which is to take some of the workload off of me as I'm not exactly getting any younger, but more importantly to ensure the stories are placed on a safe platform where they can still be read and enjoyed for many years to come. Some of these stories are the legacy of fans who are no longer with us for one reason or another.

2. Find another fiction archive software to download onto my webspace, set it up, and then manually move everything across - but there is not exactly much out there! Actually there is NOTHING out there unless I want to create my own AO3 using the base open source but I'm not sure I want to go to such extremes.
3. Recode everything as HTML and lose all the extra facilities from having it on AO3 or eFiction - search function mainly.

Of course, I am only talking about the MB efiction archive that also contains the Eric Close stories. That still leaves me with the Nick Lea archive plus other stories I inherited from Chaelyndra - I think there are some Battlestar Galactica stories there for instance coded in HTML.

4. Make sites mobile friendly:
5. Add items to empty albums:

Please remember to check out the GALLERY and FICTION archives for any new items/stories posted as I don't tend to change the website UPDATE pages for these.

David Hewlett Archive: Updates - nothing this week

I only ever had MY stories on my DH eFiction archive, so when AO3 became a perfect repository for them, I transferred them all across and removed this eFiction archive.

STILL TO DO:
- eventually, reduce the file count in the Stargate Atlantis and SG1, and Traders directories.
- add more new images/screen caps! I found directories full of images I had not sorted through.

Focused on Nick Lea: Updates - nothing this week

I will have to see if I can get these stories to AO3 too.

BOOKS/FAN STUFF **** POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT ****
FANFICTION: I hunted down and read stories to meet the final prompts on my 2nd comment_bingo card.

BOOKS: I have not yet started Surviving the Evacuation Part 9: Ireland by Frank Tayell.

----------------------------
MOVIES and FANVIDS **** POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT ****

I've decided to put anything I watch under a cut so no-one gets unintentionally spoiled, plus it means I can be more open about what I viewed :)

MOVIES: Nothing this week

FANVIDS: Nothing this week

TV SHOWS **** POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT ****

Great British Bake-Off: I enjoy watching this with the 'kids' and we caught up with the aired episodes. It's another lovely group of amateur bakers. I love how they all respect each other rather than being overly competitive.

Invasion: So Aneesha has found Trev while looking for her daughter, Sara, and Casper has found Mitsuki while connected to the alien entity hive mind. There is only one episode left for this season and I do hope either the whole series is resolved OR we get a 3rd season! I would hate to end on a permanent cliffhanger as it has been a really good show for the most part.

The Walking Dead - Daryl Dixon: Saw the season finale and I am so glad it has been renewed for a second as I really enjoyed the show overall. I actually felt sorry for Quinn. He finally realized his mistake and his last moments were wanting her to forgive him and for her to let him know he tried to help at the end... though his zombie self was almost her death! So glad Codron refused to kill the boy and let them go and later did not reveal the location of the Nest. I wonder what Genet will do to him. That woman is crazy. Of course in that scene when Sylvie asked Daryl if he had ever been in love and he didn't answer, my thoughts went straight to Rick, being the little slash fan that I am :D Loved the final scenes with Carol. I love how she can be so motherly, so loving and giving with her friends, and yet so ruthless with anyone else where her found family is concerned - and Daryl is family :) Will she end up in France looking for him next season. I've heard the next season has a title of The Book of Carol.
