Alien Series
In the second movie ALIENS we are introduced to two characters, Corporal Dwayne Hicks and Rebecca 'Newt' Jorden. Both characters are important to Ellen Ripley. Corporal Hicks takes over command of the marines after their lieutenant is put out of action. He is the only one who truly listens to what Ripley has to say about the aliens without disbelief or mocking. They protect each other during the events that follow and during a quiet moment he shows her how to use one of the Marines' main guns. Newt is the little girl who is the sole survivor of the colony at Hadley's Hope, having managed to hide in the crawl spaces. The rest of the colonists including her parents and brother were taken to be used as incubators for the aliens and are likely already dead. Ripley becomes a mother-figure for the girl and when Newt is separated from her and taken by one of the aliens to be used as a host Ripley goes after her after getting a wounded Hicks to the safety of the dropship. At the end of the movie there are four survivors in total. Ripley, Newt, Hicks who is heavily swathed in bandages and sedated after being splashed with the alien's acid blood, and the damaged synthetic, Bishop. All go into the cryotubes to sleep as the ship heads back to Earth.
The original screenplay for the next movie was supposed to be what happens when they reach Earth but instead a different script was used and in this script they killed off Hicks and Newt in the first few minutes of the movie by showing they died when the life-raft, ejected from the Sulaco after it detected aliens on-board, crashed on Fiorina 161. By the end of Alien 3 they also killed off Ripley, who had discovered she was carrying the embryo of an alien queen.
In my headcanon this was all a nightmare Ripley suffered in cryosleep and when she woke up both Hicks and Newt are still very much alive in the cryotubes lying next to hers.
Weyland-Yutani is the corporation that had sent the Sulaco to the colony after it went dark. What they did not mention to Ripley was they were the ones who had sent the colonists to investigate the alien ship. Their agent on-board was tasked with bringing an alien back with them, getting it through checks by having both Ripley and Newt carrying the 'larvae' form. Weyland-Yutani wanted to experiment upon the aliens to see if they could use them as a bio-weapon. The corporation is a major player and neither Ripley nor Hicks trust them after what happened at the colony so they stick together, taking Newt with them as she has no other relatives and would end up in the foster care system. The three of them along with Bishop become a found family, retrieving Jones the cat too. They would get hold of a small cargo ship and set out as its crew, taking on small runs and listening to any rumors of other colonies going dark for no known reason, because they know the aliens are still out there and Weyland-Yutani cannot be trusted not to use another colony or other innocent people in its pursuit of this ultimate bio-weapon.
Eureka
In the third season the show lost one of its lead characters, Nathan Stark, the Director of Global Dynamics and the bane of Jack Carter's existence as Town Sheriff. The two characters had such great chemistry in the show, playing off one another so well with their back and forth banter/snark/bickering that it really made the show fun. Even one of the other characters, Taggart, said they were like an old married couple.
I spent the rest of the series wondering when they were going to miraculously bring him back from the 'dead/deletion' but it never happened. I guess the showrunners wanted to push the Jack/Allison Blake relationship and Nathan was in the way of that. So, as far as I am concerned, the series ended at the beginning of season 4 when Jack, Allison, Henry Deacon, Douglas Fargo and Jo Lupo are accidentally sent back in time to 1945 and when they returned it was to a different time line where the notable differences were that Fargo is now the Director of Global Dynamics instead of Nathan's assistant, Lupo is now his Head of Security instead of Jack's deputy sheriff, Allison is now Head of Medical Research instead of a co-Director of Global Dynamics and Henry discovers he is married to someone called Grace. For Jack there is no change except he has a new deputy - Andy the AI clone.
In my headcanon, when they returned to the present they discovered this new time line had also restored Nathan, who is now the Head of Section Five (or Four if I want to make him a little less secretive!) He had stepped into the time capsule to stop the time loops that were threatening to destroy the entire world but this time he managed to restart the frozen photon without being deleted from time. Being a slash fan and a Jack/Nathan shipper in particular, in my headcanon, his fear of knowing he might be deleted was enough to make him question some of his life choices and in particular his relationship with Allison and with Jack. He realizes that he is still the same person he was when he and Allison were previously married so the likelihood of this second marriage being successful was extremely small. He also reflects on how much fun he has mock-teasing Jack Carter, and how so much of his day revolves around interacting with Jack, and how much he enjoys that interaction. He realizes his only reason for asking Allison to remarry him is because of Jack's seeming interest in his ex-wife and that bodes even more for the likelihood of their second marriage ending in failure. Of course, in my headcanon, almost losing Nathan is enough to shake some sense into Jack and he realizes how much he enjoys his 'battles' with Nathan. From one of the time loops he already knows Allison sees him as only a friend and, like Nathan, he realizes his only interest in Allison is because he does not want to lose Nathan to her.
