So, today I finally took the plunge and bought the new computer I've been promising I'd buy myself this January (I can no longer run some programs I need on my old computer, and also its trackpad doesn't work under warm conditions now including room temperature in the new building). I am actually typing this on it, because instead of ordering it online, I went downtown this afternoon to the apple store and bought it in person. The theory was that I'd get it and spend the evening setting it up, and be ready to go with no interruptions to my schedule - as opposed to having to stay home for a day waiting for delivery if I ordered it online. Alas for the best-laid plans, my ancient and beloved macbook (hardworking career October 2006-January 2013) is running an operating system old enough that I couldn't convince the apple store guy to let me transfer my data over myself. I now have to abandon both computers at the apple store tomorrow morning, in the hopes of getting them back tomorrow evening.
I'll probably be ridiculously productive tomorrow.
Anyway, new computer! It is ridiculously shiny, because I decided in light of the fact that I'm expecting to get another 5+ years out if it, that I should go for what is clearly the future of macbooks, and get the one with the retina display and solid-state hard drive. It is, as I said, ridiculously shiny. At the moment it doesn't quite feel like mine, because I can't personalize it yet because of the impending data transfer. Tomorrow (I hope)! In the meantime, OMG retina display. I was unaware that my photos were of such high resolution!
As the computer purchase suggests, I've been doing ALL THE THINGS this weekend, but NONE OF THE WORK. This has mostly been by design, and I'm feeling more like myself now. I got a haircut! I went out for supper with Z in Cambridge (Life Alive, Central Square=OM NOM NOM)! I followed the first two Canucks games of the season on Twitter (get your act together, Canucks)! I went out for brunch with former roommate J and a bunch of her friends! I went shopping and got two cute button-back sweaters on super-excellent sale, one of which is a shade of pleasingly difficult green! I cooked two casserole-things! I made pancakes this morning! And of course, new computer! I've also been reading away at Consumption in World History for my "Consumption and the Global Roots of the Industrial Revolution" lecture on Friday. I guess I should resume that now.
Also, as the semester gets going, I'll probably be posting more under access-lock, because students. If you want access to my teaching/emo/teaching-related emo posts, let me know, and I'll grant you access, unless I have reason to believe you are, in fact, one of my students.
