FWUMP. Since I (still) don't have a bed to flop down on dramatically, I'm flopping down dramatically on the Internet. It has been a long day! I've given my exam, once for a student who had to take it early and once for my second section, and graded that section's in-class portion (there's a paper component that they handed in when they came to take the exam), and moved out of my office, and formally made decisions about the Boots Of Glory, and I'm now packing for my trip home (wearing the Boots Of Glory as I do, of course).
In re: the Boots Of Glory, they arrived Friday, but I determined that I had ordered them a half-size too big, once I realized that it was the plastic forms inside them that was making them so tight across the arches (I've never had any boots that weren't winter boots before, how was I supposed to know the complexities of boot-packaging?). So I re-ordered them on Friday night in the half-size smaller, albeit unfortunately also at a less good sale price. The second pair came last night... and horrors, they seemed too tight across the arch. I spent yesterday evening and this morning in a state of angst and NOOOOOOOOO, but this evening when I revisited them, they seemed more comfortable, and as I've been wearing them around this evening following my decision to keep the smaller ones, they've been stretching out. YAAAAAAAY! I'm going to need some more skinny jeans! I am, of course, going to wear them home tomorrow on the plane, because Boots Of Glory, and also I'll be grading papers the whole time, so I'll need the joy (seven and a bit hours of flights...).
In re: packing up my office, my department is moving! My current institution of higher learning and Jesuits has just completed the construction of a fancy new humanities(!!!!) building, and we're going to be occupying most of the third floor of the south wing! Of course, moving an academic department is a big job - and I can't say my department has been calm and polite and patient about the process. I don't think most of us like change - and we really didn't like the first round of moving information that went out informing us that we couldn't put books in the bins for the movers. As if! What else is there to even move? Luckily, that was hastily revised, and the halls of the old department when I left this evening for the last time are full of stacks of black plastic bins four high on trolleys. Most of them are full of books, and four of them are mine. I've officially moved out - I took down my giant Michelin map of Brittany and packed it away this evening.
I take the bus to the bus to the airport at 7:57 tomorrow morning with all my books and marking. Needless to say, work will continue throughout the "holidays" in the great realm and city of V-dot. I foresee spending a lot of quality time in the lovely accommodating upstairs of the Bean Scene downtown.
