Well, despite paper-writing, this has been a much nicer Hallowe'en in Rennes than last year's Hallowe'en in Rennes and not-Rennes! This time last year, I was flipping out over the mystery insect bite I got in the sketchy hotel Marek and I were staying at in the Montgermont Décoparc. That day we also explored the deserted Rennes city center, which was pretty sketchy without anyone around, and as a first impression of Rennes, it really didn't help my nerves as I was getting ready to come back this year! On the other hand, our trip to le Mont-Saint-Michel, a year ago tomorrow, was excellent. I'm currently living a couple minutes' walk from the #4 bus stop we walked to at some ungodly hour in the morning in order to get to the train station for our bus to Mont-Saint-Michel. I'm now preparing for an even more ungodly start to my morning on Wednesday, at the same bus stop, where I'll have to catch the bus at 5:20 am to get to the train station in time for my 6:02 train.
Today, in addition to paper-writing, of which I did some but not enough to make tomorrow not suck, I did many errands. I went and did my pre-trip laundry (I don't know if la laverie will be open tomorrow because of Toussaint), went downtown and got myself a batch of adorable Le Creuset ramekins with lids to take back to Boston with me, went to the grocery store and picked up some Breton shortbread and caramels for JK, who is going to be putting me up for the week in Boston, and also stopped by the boutique SNCF to print out my train tickets for Wednesday. Now, except for packing, I'm all set for doing nothing but finishing my paper tomorrow.
I sort of wish I could take an anniversary trip to le Mont-Saint-Michel instead, though. If it's nice, maybe I'll console myself with an anniversary walk out to Montgermont - or not. I did discover a beautiful walking-trail along the canal d'Ille-et-Rance the other weekend, that isn't too far from here, so maybe if things are going well tomorrow afternoon I'll unchain myself from my desk and go for a walk.
I also have to figure out a way to get my rent money for November to my landlady before I leave, preferably without disturbing her observance of Toussaint, whatever that involves.
