Ha! Roommate J and I just went out and retrieved a microwave that someone across the street discarded on his curb. Much groaning over the nastiness of the grime and gunk coating it and a mug of hot water later, we have determined that it still works.

All I have to say about the microwave is it may have been thrown away for a reason. Microwaves have shielding so their damaging emissions don't leave the box, but if that's compromised in any way they can be very dangerous.

That's true, and as we're going to have to give the thing a really good cleaning, we can check for any visible damage then.

The thing is, though, that yesterday was sort of city-wide moving day in Boston, and people abandon tons of stuff - stoves, perfectly good furniture, $1900 stereos... whatever they can't move. So it's entirely possible that that's what happened in this case.

Warning duly noted, though.
