She wasn’t sure why she let him in when she knew he would just complain about Leonard’s newest girl the whole time. Sheldon loved his routine and hated any break in it. From the moment he sat down, Penny wasn’t disappointed.
“It’s in the Roommate Agreement, you know.”
She rolled her eyes. Always with the Roommate Agreement. It never failed.
“Sheldon, I don’t see why it matters.”
“Why it matters?” He gave her a scandalized look. “Penny, any break in my routine -
“There, that!” She exclaimed, ignoring the scandalized look he gave her for cutting him off. “Why is routine so important?”
“My dear Penny, had all the great physicists of the past simply altered their routines while performing their most important experiments, we would know nothing of harmonic properties, or of the photoelectric effect, or of nuclear fission.”
She just stared at him, confused.
“Oh, I don’t know why I bother.”
“Hey, I know some things.” Why she felt the need to defend herself for once, she couldn’t say. “I may not be a string theorist, but I know some science.”
Sheldon snorted, shaking his head.
“Haughty derision, huh?” She stood and walked to the fridge. “Tell you what. I’ll prove it. And if I do, you have to have a drink with me.”
Sheldon snorted again. “Oh, this should be good. Like a student of arithmetic telling a mathematician how to integrate.”
She smirked and opened the freezer, pulling a beer bottle from its depths. Returning to the couch, she set it carefully on the coffee table.
“I fail to see the use of a bottle of alcohol.”
Her smirk grew wider.
“I give you super cooling,” she stated, and gave the beer a sharp tap against the table. Instantly, the liquid began to solidify into ice. She stole a glance at Sheldon, leaning forward to look more closely at the glass bottle.
“Impressive.” The physicist admitted. “But can you explain how it works?”
“Well, the freezer cools the molecules to less than freezing. Then, when you tap the bottle an ice crystal forms, causing a chain reaction until the whole bottle is frozen.” She held her breath, that was the most she had been able to make out of the explanations she had found.
“A highly simplified explanation, but essentially correct. There may be hope for you yet, Penny.”
She smiled, knowing that was as close to approval as she would ever get from Sheldon. Who knew bar tricks could pay off so well? “Great, let’s get drunk and bad mouth Leonard.”
She took a few minutes to mix shots, eventually pouring one for each of them. Sheldon accepted his, staring at it apprehensively until Penny sat again.
“Don’t worry, it’s not that strong,” she stated, honestly. “To science!”
Sheldon gave a wry smile and raised his glass in the toast. “To science.”
