Finished up the arc today and OH THE FEELS I HAVE. None for Jellal though.
I think I'm going to change things up a little bit and write some lists about my overall thoughts regarding the Nirvana arc. Because I'm a dork who likes lists, what can I say.
So!
THINGS THAT GAVE ME FEELS
- Hearing the Dragonforce theme during the final battle. OH MY GOSH I WAS DANCING IN MY SEAT AND CLAPPING WITH EXCITEMENT YOU HAVE NO IDEA ALSFKHALSFKAH!
- Seriously though, that cue is amazing.
- WENDY HAS OFFENSIVE DRAGON SLAYER MAGIC HECK YES YOU GO LITTLE DARLING WENDY!
- Gemini coming to help Lucy destroy her lacrima. Ten bucks says Lucy's getting that key and adding Gemini to her spirit arsenal.
- Natsu vs. Zero. All of it.
- Including the part where Jellal took the bulllet for Natsu. Natsu just looked so cutely stunned and then he accepted the power-up gift and aaaaahhhh...
- Darn it all, I like their relationship. How on earth did this happen?
- No seriously, how did I end up liking everyone else's relationships with Jellal more than Erza's?
- Natsu entering Dragon Force. HNNNNNNGGGH. I'm sorry, just... whenever Natsu goes super saiyan OP powerful my heart just flutters with fangirl feelings.
- Oh hell, at this rate I might as well say the WHOLE DAMN CLIMAX SEQUENCE.
- WHEN EVERYONE TEAMED UP TO CRUNCH THE LACRIMAS?
- AND NATSU WAS LIKE, "MY FRIENDS GIVE ME STRENGTH!"
- AND ZERO KICKED NATSU AROUND SO MUCH THAT I WAS LIKE, "STOP HURTING MY BABY YOU MEANIE!"?
- AND IGNEEL SPOKE TO NATSU INSIDE THE VOID AND GOT HIM TO BREAK OUT OF IT?
- AND NATSU KICKED ZERO'S ASS AND THEY DESTROYED THE LACRIMAS?
- YEAH. AWESOME.
- And then after the battle when the Council showed up to arrest Hot Eye and Jellal, holy cats, what were these unexpected feelings for Hot Eye and his adorable family backstory?
- This show is so amazing. It made my heart wrench for a third string, butt-ugly former villain.
- Wendy towards Jellal is so precious and it is very, very hard not to ship them.
- NATSU WAS THE FIRST ONE TO PROTEST JELLAL'S ARREST! HOLY CRAP HIM GOING HOT-BLOODED AND SHOUTING ABOUT HOW HE'S PART OF THEIR NAKAMA?
- I can't decide if my omgfeels reaction to that moment is because of my unexpected love for Natsu's friendship with Jellal or because I just love Natsu (or anyone on this show really) ranting about the Power of Friendship in general.
- ...Okay, I'll admit it, Jellal saying goodbye to Erza and her flashing back to how he gave her her last name because of her pretty hair was really sweet. And gave me some feels.
- And then it was revealed that Caitshelter is an illusion just for Wendy and my feels exploded and I died.
- TEARS FOREVER.
- OH MY POOR SWEET BABY WENDY.
- AND ERZA COMFORTING HER?
- *sob*
Things that did not give me feels/That I did not like
- How ridiculously stretched out this arc was. At one point I was like, "STOP CUTTING BACK TO EVERYONE JUST STANDING AROUND AT THEIR LACRIMAS AND JUST HAVE THEM SHOOT DANGIT!"
- No seriously. Major arc fatigue. If I have to keep checking the wikipedia episode list to see where we finally end, that is not a good thing.
- As I mentioned before, I wasn't keen on the initial helplessness/uselessness of the girls. But that was rectified halfway through and balanced out by Ichiya, Natsu, Jellal, and Hibiki's uselessness later on so.
- The villains were ridiculously overpowered my X'hal.
- Jellal still fails to make an impression on me. My only reactions to him come as a result of other characters' reactions to him. Natsu's accepting him. Wendy's faith in him. Erza's heartbreak at having to let the Council take him. By himself, he inspires no devotion from me. Somehow I don't think that's what was supposed to happen.
- I now fully get why Jellal/Erza is a thing. They are admittedly really sweet towards each other and the narrative goes out of its way to make them super duper angsty and tragic epic OTP. But... I dunno. I really don't. It just.. isn't doing it for me.
- I think it's because I don't understand why Erza has any affections for him. When they were kids it made sense. He inspired her and gave her hope and she was naturally drawn to him. And then he got possessed, betrayed and tried to kill her, and cast her out. She spends most of the time leading up to the Tower of Heaven arc hating and resenting him, to the point of hating Siegrain by proxy, even when she thought Siegrain was a separate person. She was determined to bring him down, or die in the attempt.
- And then ALL OF A SUDDEN in the middle of trying to gut him she's suddenly like, "Wait! I still love you! Let us die together!" Bwuh? Was she still carrying a torch for the kid he used to be the whole time? He was quite clearly not that person anymore though, possesed or not. Which he promptly proves by betraying her again and trying to sacrifice her to feed the R-System.
- And again, at the start of this arc when she learned he was alive, she was all, "RAAR MUST CONFRONT AND DEMAND RECOMPENSE." Which is odd seeing as how she supposedly believed he'd reverted back to good and sacrificed himself to stop Etherion at the end of the Tower of Heaven arc. Consistency, what is that? Anyway, she's all raring to make him pay for his crimes and yet she once again can't kill him or allow him to die.
- Everything after she tells him to live and atone for his sins would have been a great starting point for the kindling of their relationship. Starting point. But no, after spending all of one freaking day with the new amnesiatic Emo!Jellal she's pretty clearly ready to tell him she loves him. GURL. TOO SOON. YOU BARELY KNOW WHO IS HE NOW. HE'S NEITHER THE SWEET HEROIC KID YOU KNEW BEFORE, NOR THE HEARTLESS VILLAIN YOU FOUGHT. SLOW THE HELL DOWN.
- ...I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make this section one big anti-Jellal/Erza tirade. They are cute and the obvious OTP endgame Erza ship. I just have... a lot of problems with it.
- Other complaints? Are they any?
- ...Ichiya is still kind of creepy. I don't really like him. I will happily hope he doesn't show up in the show ever again. Ren, Hibiki, and Eve can stay though.
Whew. Anyway, enjoying the show very much, aside from my minor gripes here and there. Let's see what the next arc holds!
