Lady Appreciation Post: Lucy Pevensie

Tuckered out from work, but I haven't forgotten my Lady Post!

Going back to a childhood favorite this time.  It's been a while since I've read Chronicles of Narnia so I may forget a few details and I'll probably be brief, but I'll try to cover everything I love about her all the same.

From the very beginning, when Mom read the Chronicles of Narnia out loud to wee little Ally and me, Lucy was my favorite Pevensie.  She was the first to discover Narnia.  The first to believe in the world beyond the wardrobe.  First to meet the faun Tumnus, learn of the White Witch, and see the lamplit snowy woods of Lantern Waste.

I think it was Lucy's spunky personality that first attracted me to her character.  She was insatiably curious, liked adventure, and just accepted on sight the fact that a magical world could be accessed through the wardrobe.  She stuck to her guns too, in the midst of all doubt.  Lucy was always the most trusting of the Pevensie children, and the one whose faith was never shaken.  Her inner strength and devotion to following Aslan never wavered throughout all the trials she faced.

Lucy was also passionately kind.  She always strove to do right by the people around her, from insisting that she and her siblings try to do something to help Tumnus when he was arrested, to healing the wounded on the battlefield, to bravely volunteering to wander a dark creepy manor to find a spell book and reverse the invisibility spell cast on the dufflepuds.

Lucy's courage even became the trait she was most beloved and known for by her people.  Queen Lucy the Valiant, is what they called her, and no fitter title is there for one so brave and pure of heart and sharp of mind.

Lucy also had some of most poignant and meaningful friendships of the series.  One of them was her companionship with the faun Tumnus, whom she swayed out of the White Witch's service by simply appealing to his better nature.

But my favorite Lucy friendship will always be her special connection to Aslan, the Great Lion, High King over all kings in Narnia.  Lucy's devotion and faith in Aslan granted her the ability to see him when the others couldn't, to know more of his heart, to have a unique bond with the shaper and creator of all Narnia.  Perhaps it's because it's the sort of relationship I strive for with my own faith.  I've always yearned to be as In Tune with Aslan as Lucy was.

Ally and I like to joke that Lucy and Aslan are "Starbucks buddies".

Lucy played many parts in the Narnia series: discoverer, explorer, inhabitant, healer, warrior, ruler... and queen.  She is a beautiful confident girl with a ton of moxie and spirit, and also a soft, teachable heart and love for all things Narnian.  I have a deep and abiding affection for her character, and I only adore her more with every re-read of the Narnia series.

My hat is off to you, Miss Pevensie... Queen Lucy the Valiant.
