For "Fire and Ice", my Hot Spot/Argent collection:

Chapter Five, "Mirrors" Oh and Ally and I also watched Studio Ghibli's Tales from Earthsea today. Triiiiiiiipppyyyyyy.
So like, it only vaguely resembled anything from the books it was inspired by I think. I dunno, I've only heard plot summaries and seen the TV movie which was apparently a poor adaptation of the books as well so I can't really say with any authority but it didn't quite seem like Ursula K. LeGuin's "type" of story.
First there's a ship out at sea that spots dragons fighting and this is apparently bad. Then there's a council meeting and the kings talks with a bunch of people, including two servant girls who express concern that the crown prince Arren is missing. Then said crown prince Arren stabs his father... for... some reason. It's not quite gone into much detail until like, halfway through the movie when Arren and Therru AKA Love Interest (and yes, I was starting to ship them towards the end) have a little bonding moment and he explains something about having a darkness inside him that feels like a separate person or some weirdness.
Ally and I kept wanting to theorize that it was a gebbith that he'd unleashed and was hunting him and had stolen his face.
Anyway, Arren meets up with Sparrowhawk (the protagonist of the first few Earthsea books), now an old guy Archmage. Arren tags along with him into a town, saves Therru from slavers, mopes and angsts a lot because GUILT, gets captured by slavers because he's stupid and slept out in the open, gets rescued, things like that.
Eventually Sparrowhawk and Arren make their way to Tenar's house. (Tenar is another protagonist I recognize.) Arren has trippy nightmares about his guilt, Sparrowhawk imparts life lessons, Therru is angryface at Arren a lot before their bonding moment because she can sense that he's killed someone and she DOES NOT APPROVE.
Oh and meanwhile there's this evil wizard named Cob who looks like a Marilyn Manson chick and is voiced by William Dafoe in the dub AKA the Green Goblin and he spends a lot of time being MASSIVELY CREEPY HOLY TOMATOES.
Arren runs off to run away from the "shadow" that's following him, that Ally and I thought was the gebbith because it had his appearance and gets captured AGAIN by Cob and gets tricked into telling the villain his true name, thus enabling Cob to control him. And Cob has his people grab Tenar as bait for Sparrowhawk and there's a showdown at the castle where Sparrowhawk breaks Arren out of his brainwashing but gets caught and Therru doesn't stay put like she's told to and follows Arren's "shadow", gebbith, whatever it was to the castle.
Shadow!Arren tells her stuff that's all very confusing about light and darkness and balance. Oh yeah. The movie will pause to do this once every so often. Blah blah balance this blah blah immortality blah blah light is fading, anyway Shadow!Arren sends her off and she sneaks into the fortress and finds Arren moping and snaps him out of his funk by shouting at him and giving the value lesson about how life is precious and you have to treasure it because you're going to die and randomly they have a vision about a dragon.
Final showdown time! Cob continues to be MASSIVELY CREEPY OH MY GOSH and I had to squeeze Ally's hand a lot, and they climb to the top of the castle and... Therru apparently is a dragon. Or something. She gets red eyes and then turns into a dragon and crispy-fries Cob and she and Arren fly off and bond some more and then go home with Tenar and Sparrowhawk. No explanation is really given for the dragon weirdness. Apparently Therru can just do that.
Movie end. And I actually really liked it, for what it was. Kind of weird, like I mentioned. But interesting.
Oh and Kevin Michael Richardson voiced one of the minor characters. HNNNNNGH OH LET ME LISTEN TO YOU SPEAK FOREVER MY VOICE CRUSH.
Castle in the Sky is still my favorite Studio Ghibli film though.
