Book Review: Cold Days - Harry Dresden #14

Dec 28, 2015 10:37

I have heard a phrase coined on various forums and fan platforms - in Joss we trust, referring to the hope that Joss Whedon always delivers.

I will admit to some trepidation on starting this installment of Dresden for two main reasons: 1. Changes was such a dramatic, rollercoaster ride of a story and really fulfilled its title - complete and utter change for Dresden and the reader occured and was set up for future books.
2. Ghost Story was engaging, interesting and most nerve wracking. Was Harry dead? What was going on? Was there a chance he'd be ok?

All of the anticipation and tension around whether or not Harry was in fact dead, alive, doomed to be the Winter Knight and what did that mean, kept me from reading Cold Days even though I bought it months ago. The "Changes" had been so exciting, so dramatic, but was I going to like the new outline, the new approach without Harry being a detective, Warden, Molly's mentor, no Beetle,  no Mister, no Mouse???

I now need to say quite categorically - In Jim I trust.
and I shouldn't have doubted you, Mr Butcher. What. A. Ride!

Cold Days was the rollercoaster with the squee of 'They're all still alive and maybe not okay but LOOOKKKK! There they all are!" I thoroughly enjoyed it. Fast paced, crazy, madness and still plenty of unresolved issues, but gosh, I started reading it at 4pm and finished it at 2.30 am. What a story!

There were a few issues, pacing mostly i.e. going over ground that had been covered and I don't think it needed to be as long as it was. For all of the massive, crazy deadline and set up Harry faced, it could have been less busy.

Nonetheless, I am enamoured and a small piece of the worry has dissapated. The changes were awesome and I am happy to go along for the rest of the ride. Lets see where we go with this.
