Book Review: The Cloud Roads by Martha Wells

I've heard about this book from a number of fans on lj and I must say it has intrigued me.On a whim I bought it and oh boy am I glad I did. Right off the bat, it ticked so many of my fav fic things boxes. Incredible world building. Ancient, ruined cultures cluttering the landscape, just begging the questions: who, where, what? A loner, amongst strangers, an 'ugly duckling' as it were, who finds his swans. Wings. I was as happy as a fangirl in a library.

I thoroughly enjoyed the entire book and pretty much read it in one day, until late in the night. Drama, romance, angst, more drama, lots of action. I was and am heartedly impressed.

Is there a however? a but? Not really - more of a question, inspired by the book: can original fiction have a mary sue? Alas, I asked myself the question and have been pondering it for a while (and may post about it) but the question does not detract from my enjoyment of the story (even if the answer is yes). :D

Bring on book the second!
