So Yesterday was a little weird....

So Yesterday Monday was a little weird....

It's been that kind of week, the kind that just gets away from you. I had this great little post all mentally composed on Tuesday and now, I am sitting here trying to recall if it's Wednesday or Thursday. As a result, this post is not going to be as awesome amusing as it could have been as I've forgotten some most some of what I wanted to say.

Here goes though.

Perhaps it was a combination of a busy weekend, a long stressful day with too much work to sign off in one day and a pounding headache, but I was feeling just a tad punch drunk late Monday afternoon. In retrospect the weight loss pills and my empty stomach may have been additional contributing factors.

My new employee, who shall here after be referred to as MPG (Most Probably a Goth) popped into my office to discuss the spreadsheet I had asked him to complete. (I was going to use my usual first letter spiel to refer to RL folks, but I seem to have a lot of X's in my life and it was going to get confusing. In a fit of pdragon76 inspired RL psydonuem namery, I hereby dub newbie hr guy MPG. I have mild hopes that pdragon76's aussie awesomeness will also rub off on my writing skills.)

While we were discussing and working on the spreadsheet, my overly tired brain was puttering along nicely, and we needed to set a timeframe for responses for our queries. Somehow the fan part of my brain segued into Discworld as we discussed dates and the viability of people meeting the deadline. My foggy brain pondered to itself: Heh, we should use a fictional day... what was....

And I mumbled aloud to MPG, "Hmmm, does Pratchett have an 8th day or a 13th month?"

MPG stared at me for half a second, I blinked, reviewed the last few seconds in horror - Did I really just say that? Way to impress the new hire, geek out with random dsicworld trivia and fictional days and/or months.
Fortunately, my tired brain found a last minute surge of energy and I beamed, "You like Pratchett, right?" with hardly a pause.

Yep, I was taking a swing on the 'fanboy' vibe my geekdar had mused about when I first met MPG. My geekdar is usually a little fritzy, as 'geek' is such a broad, all encompassing term and while I may be a fangirl/geek and recognise a fellow geek in some arbitary dude/ette at a party... the odds of his/her geek love being limited to gaming is pretty high in SA.

I played the potential mutual geek card though and MPG blinked back. "Oh sure. I love Death."

*\o/* SAVE...

Potentially awkward moment bypassed as I responded with: "CAPS ALL the WAY! but Vimes... Vimes is my man."

And so ensued not a work related discussion but the usual flapfest of 'You've seen Firefly right? Gah!' and "I'll give you Cujo, but Tommy Knockers was rubbish." as we established where our shared fandom loves intersected. MPG is mostly into horror and sci fi (my goth vibe was accurate too) and we could have chatted for hours.

I maaayyyy... have shared more (overshare facepalm) than appropriate for newbie/boss relationship, but the exhaustion triggered verbal diahorrea was unabated. I may even have argued that the Stand was superior to Green Mile. It's a bit of a blur. Nonetheless, I eventually circled us back to work and reigned in my desire to natter on about space cowboys.

Normally, I love finding people with shared interested and MPG is not the only one at the office. He's not even the first employee of mine whose turned out to be an awesome fangirl/boy. But never this soon (MPG has only reported to me for a week) and never so.... randomly.

Yesterday (Tuesday) we sat again and chatted briefly about anime, so at least an amiable working relationship is established.

In summary: Fandom FTW

I did however revoke his cool status yesterday... he speaks four languages and that's just not fair. So ... demoted.

*see... still punch drunk*
