[ note: mood music. ]

It was cold on the seas; the Doctor had chosen to stand outside against the railing, hair ruffling in the freezing wind. He was a bit more adapt to cold, due to his lower body temperature, and had spent most of the morning--no, day outside. His regular tweed jacket was gone, replaced by a much more insulated one. He even ( Read more... )

Despite the fact that the Big Guy was injured and Henry was on a mission of utmost importance, Helen was fairly sure that the mission would have gone fine with herself, Kate, and Will. It was just a retrieval mission after all. Declan opted to take care of the Old City Sanctuary while they were gone. But, she wasn't one to turn down the Doctor if he wanted to help.

Of course she still had to tell him to stop pressing buttons on the ship.

Helen stepped outside onto the hull of the ship. She pulled the hood of her coat up before stuffing her gloved hands into her pockets and joining him.

The Doctor chuckled as he looked at her, turning his light green eyes back to the seascape. "I'm not frozen," he stated simply, folding his hands on the railing, elbows perched there safely. After a moment or two, he added; "... yet."

He breathed in deeply before he let out a small cloud of vapor from his lips, shivering slightly as the cold started to get to him, finally, after so long.

"So--what exactly are we retrieving?" He turned, leaning his back against the railing now, looking at her. "I was, well, spacing out. A bit. Just a tiny bit."

She smiled and shook her head, looking out over the water as a few icebergs came into view. Distant from the the ship of course. She gave a simple shrug before looking at him.

"Some how that is hardly surprising." Helen smiled. "There are is a species that exists on the coasts of Greenland known as Pinniursus maritimus. We're bringing them to the Sanctuary under protection before they dwindle out."

"Then there's already a colony, there." The Doctor looked at her as he spoke, tilting his head a bit so his ears weren't so unbearably cold. "Relatively quick work. Well, it's an adventure." He offered Helen a grin, scooting over a bit to knock elbows with her. As he turned and looked out at the sea again, he eyed the icebergs.

"That's a sight I can't say I'm fond of."

For all the teasing she did about him being a schoolboy, she had moments of being a schoolgirl herself. She rolled her eyes slightly at his reactions to the icebergs.

"1912 was quite a long time ago. The 1900s did come before the 2000s." She teased. "Although I'm not entirely certain where that scarf of yours comes from in the timeline... maybe it's not even from Earth. How have you managed to not trip over it?"

Helen stopped leaning on the railing and tugged at the scarf around his neck. She pulled it over his ears then leaned forward on the railing again.

The light tug caused a light cough in return, as he tried to look miffed when she commented about his scarf, even if it mostly came out as mockingly so, his smile ruining the image. "I had this scarf in a past life of mine. Fourth. Looks much better on me, if I do say so myself. Honestly, not quite sure how I never did, 158 years ago." He raised an eyebrow as he rambled, wondering himself. He shook his head.

"Either way, Madame Nostradamus made it for me." He leaned in to her ear. "Let's not be jealous, Helen, Will and Kate are still back there, wouldn't be nice to cause a scene."

She bit back a laugh and shied away just a bit. "Just a hundred and fifty-eight? Please, Doctor. I believe you are being much too modest with your age." Helen reached up and flipped the combed hair he had to the side of his face.

While he was distracted she turned to face him, turning him as well to try and fix the scarf around his neck. Even though it was much too long, she moved it around his shoulders again. She leaned forward a bit while she worked with it and lowered her voice.

"I don't see why I would be jealous of Madame Nostradamus." She glanced up at him. "After all, you're not going to Greenland on a naval ship with her at the moment."

"It was a hundred and fifty-eight years ago! I was... seven-hundred and forty-nine, if I remember correctly." He protested, having to pull away, distracted when she flipped his bangs away from his face. When he was back to focus, his smile resurfaced, as he looked down at her. "Yes, ah--true. I'm sure you could knit me a much better scarf. Do you think you can make snow angels in Greenland? Honestly, I haven't done that since I was ninety." He glanced over to the narrow strip of land not too far away.

"Though that's not a priority, no, not at all, the Abnormals are." The Doctor nodded firmly, before giving her a sideglance, reaching over and brushing her hair from her face. "Can you properly hear me with that thing on?"

For a moment she followed his eyesight to the strip of land. Ah, well, at least she wouldn't have to hear much more complaining from Will. Admittedly they did have a history of being trapped in water-y places under not so brilliant circumstances. The submarine in the Bermuda Triangle, the oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico.

"Of course I can." Helen raised her eyebrows but ducked her head down slightly to hide the smile. "And, given that it's mainly ice not snow, I'm not entirely positive the snow angels would work. For you it'd be rather like a snow alien," she gave a tug on the scarf once she was satisfied, "and I still don't believe you are only nine hundred and seven."

The Doctor looked down at his scarf and fixed more to his liking, not changing too much, just tossing the ends over both his shoulders. "Yes, well, that's all technical. Ice angel--alien, then. If you don't trust me with my age, well, I'm afraid there's no way of telling. No use for a birth certificate, on Gallifrey." He shrugged, as the winds died down a bit; the ship was starting to slow, little by little.

"... actually, I don't see a reason why I'm thinking of making an angel, angels and me never do mix." The Host, Weeping Angels, the Archangel Network... though, that reminded him. He looked back at Helen, looking curious. "Now, I don't like Will very much, you and I know that very clearly, but I have noticed that he's a bit more... Will-y. Complaining. ... why is that? Fear of water?"

Helen did her best not to think about the Weeping Angels. Her accent had softened again. It was July, seven months after the entire escapade with the catacombs. There was the occasional nightmare, but not any that she'd bother him with. She was British - they carried on ( ... )

The way she suddenly stopped in the submarine story made the Doctor's gaze change--he could tell there was more she was going to say, but she stopped because he was going to be uncomfortable. And, normally, he would ask her to embellish--but not this time. He was silent as she spoke, and sighed. Yes, well, that was a good reason to be concerned.

"Innocent trip to Greenland," he stated simply, with a small smile on his face. "Now, I won't say 'what could possibly go wrong' because that's asking for something to go wrong, but I sincerely doubt anything will. It's Greenland. And you did mention that the Abnormal we're collecting is peaceful." He nudged her lightly. "He's got no reason to be worried."

"And so was the Vampire squid, until it's natural enemy hopped on board the helicopter and crashed it to land." Helen said, nudging him back. "Although, I agree. The only thing here remotely dangerous are the icebergs."

Helen leaned up against the railing of the hull again.

Speaking of icebergs, the Doctor was eying one particularly large one. "And that's a danger I'm not keen on repeating." He turned and started towards the doors, knowing they'd need to get back into the cabin to disembark.

She paused for a moment before turning to him as he moved to the doors. Helen caught up to him, arms still across her chest. "Repeat?"

"What, didn't I tell you? I was on the Titanic, too." He stated with a smile. "Well--twice, but the last time, that was a starliner, the first time, it was the actual Titanic and I ended up screaming and clinging to the side of a very icy iceberg. Which is why I argued about the date of the sinking."
