Dreams And Wishes

In the quiet of the now almost deserted medical suite of the Torchwood Institute, Rose thought of all the might-have-been's and what-if's in her life so far, then sighed brokenly. If dreams were wishes made by the subconcious mind, as the Doctor had told her once in a rare quite moment, then she appeared to be wishing 24 hours a day.

She wished she'd held on tighter; she wished she hadn't been able to hear the anguish in his scream of her name as she fell towards the Void; she wished he'd been able to say it back to her; but most of all, she wished she'd been brave enough to tell him the truth.

As her lips pressed against the downy head of the tiny boy in her arms, his hair just as unruly as his father's,she allowed a single solitary tear to fall. As it glistened against the faintly ginger hair of her newborn son, she made him a promise.

"We'll find him, your dad. We'll be a family. One day. I promise. No matter how long it takes. See, he's brilliant, your dad, and maybe, if he can sense you with your two hearts and your clever little psychic brain, then he'sll move every star in the heavens to get bck to us. And then, he won't be alone any more."

Rose laid the now-sleeping infant in the crib at the side of her bed, then lay back against the pillows and closed her eyes. She was exhausted, and she had cried enough now. She wanted her heart to just stop aching, but it wouldn't. She needed to rest, as as her son snuffled in his sleep, she began to drift off herself.

She was dimly aware of the sound of her room door openeing andf closing softly, the rustle of a coat and footsteps towards the perspex crib. She wished whoever it was would just sod off. He was her baby, not a specimen in a laboratory. The osft male voice that accompanied the footsteps made her want to weep.

"Well, now who are you, then? You're just a little bit different, a teeny tiny bit special, aren't you young man! Well, I say a little bit, I might mean quite a lot, actualy. And very special indeed! An impossible amount, really. And right about now, your mum usually tells me off for being rude and rambling on."

Rose knew she was dreaming, she had to be, because he wans't here, wasn't real. It wasn't fair, her mind playing tricks on her like this when her defenses were down.

Her eyes flew open, however when cool breath whispered over her ear.

"Oh, there you go sleeping again, Miss Tyler!" the oh-so-familiar voice chided her gently. "Wake up, Rose. I'm here. I made it. And he's wonderful and I love you, and you're incredible! And he's ginger, Rose! And that's quite enough ands for now Mmmph!"

Interrupting the rummaging of his hand through the bedhead that was his crowning glory, the mother of his impossible child launched herself at him and fused her lips to his in a kiss so fierce it could have burned a sun. As he responded enthusiastically, he thanked Rassilon and all the Time Lords that his Rose was a terrible liar!

Watching from the corridor, Jackie wiped the tears from her eyes and sniffled. Much as she didn't want to lose Rose again, especially now there was her grandson to consider, she knew the love in that room would survive until the end of time. Turning away and walking silently along the corridor, she shook her head.

"Since when have come over all soppy where that alien is concerned," she thought, then smiled.

She knew she'd see them again. Someday. There'd be time enough for that slap then.
