She stands immobile, a portrait of a tragic statue frozen in time. The bitter wind scratches harshly at her face; its howl and the dull roar of the crashing waves ringing in her ears as she watches everything she has been fighting for, longing for, hoping for, dreaming for, begin to fade. The whirring engines grow fainter and fainter, until there is nothing, nothing but the stark vastness of the icy water and jagged rocks.
She can’t breathe. There is a sharp, unbearable ache piercing her chest. It is beginning to spread; slender tendrils fracturing, spidering out, growing longer, larger, thicker, deeper. She is going to shatter, shatter into thousands of broken pieces, like cold, brilliant crystal upon frozen, lifeless marble. She’s slipping away, teetering on a precipice, falling, falling, falling, into the cruel darkness. She steels herself, waiting for it to claim her as she breaks.
But it doesn’t.
A familiar hand slips into her own, its unfamiliar warmth pulling her back and catching her. She turns her
head, surfacing from the darkness and looks into his eyes; eyes dark with pain, its depths reflecting everything she feels tearing inside of her. Yet, despite everything, the hand clasped in hers and the eyes - oh such familiar eyes - gazing desperately back into her own, comforts and reassures her of one thing.
She is not alone.
