Here's a meme from isiscaughey that makes me happy:
Comment with the name of a (or some) female character(s) and I'll tell you why I love her (them). In return, you can do the same in your journal (if you so desire).
Rose Tyler is utterly fantastic! The haters don't know what they're missing. I think the moment I first loved her was in The Unquiet Dead, the first episode of New Who I saw, when she ignored her own imminent death long enough to tell the Doctor "I'm so glad I met you" with a genuine smile. That was just one of many examples of how gutsy and full of heart she is. She's also smart (not educated, but quite clever), perceptive, compassionate, loyal, and incredibly determined. I love her best in S1, when she challenges the Doctor constantly and grows before our eyes with every episode, but she has plenty of moments of greatness in other seasons too. My Rose Tyler highlights include:
-Dalek. She approaches this scary-looking metal creature with compassion. When she is certain that she's about to die, she her first concern is reassuring the Doctor that it wasn't his fault. Even after she's seen what the Dalek can do, she can still treat it with compassion, even stepping between it and the Doctor's gun.
-PotW. Her incredible determination to get back to the Doctor enables her to do the impossible (with a little help from Mickey and Jackie). The girl who was once told by her mother that she was getting "airs and graces" from working in a nice shop holds the power of the universe, and she uses it purely for love.
-Turn Left. Separated from the Doctor, Rose is forced to become the Doctor, and she does a pretty damn good job of it. She leads a UNIT team and coaches Donna Noble through saving the world. She's enigmatic, smart, take-charge, but still deeply compassionate.
-I want to list a whole lot of other episodes, but I want to leave some time for Adelle.
Adelle DeWitt is sure as hell a BAMF. I love the complexity of her character. She weaves back and forth through almost every possible shade of morally gray. She can be ice cold and capable of playing ruthless power games, but she has a heart and a sense of responsibility to those in her care. Witness her righteous fury when she understands how Sierra came to be in the Dollhouse. She can also be really funny, given the chance. (Her drugged scenes with raiding the drawer of inappropriate starches make me crack up every time.) Her dynamic with Topher that we see in Epitaph One and increasingly through the latter half of S2 is fascinating and beautifully acted. She is best summed up by a conversation with Mr. Dominic:
Dominic: "You played a good hand, ma'am." DeWitt: "I played a bad hand very well. There is a difference."
Yes, Adelle DeWitt could beat you at poker (for any given value of "you," up to and including Chuck Norris) even if her hand consisted of three Uno cards and a piece of string.
