Doctor Who, "Deep Breath"

We have a new Doctor!  A new start!  Alas, it seems like my disconnect from recent Doctor Who was due to showrunner more than actor playing the Doctor, and that hasn't changed.  Still, this was an okay episode with some things I very much enjoyed in this episode in addition to the things that I disliked.

The Good-Peter Capaldi as the Doctor.  He ( Read more... )

Hi! So excited to have a new episode to comment with you :D Also, I need a Twelve icon!

I agree with soooo much of what you said. First of all, about how all of a sudden I'm really really enthusiastic about the show again! :D And before Deep Breath, I didn't even have a rewatch! I thought I may rewatch the last few specials, but felt totally not motivated. Particularly since the news came out that Moffat is staying for one more season after this one :/

I like that this Doctor is "calmer" somewhat. And gravitas is such a good word to describe him, based on what we saw so far.

I disliked the Madame Vastra, Jenny, and Strax trio for so long... I love Strax, but could never really warm up to Madame Vastra and Jenny. (Maybe also cause The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood were my least fave episodes in that season.) Finally I think they're growing on me. They provided the sense of familiarity among the huge change of the regeneration. The same with Clara. Totally reminded me of Rose and Nine's regeneration *melancholy sigh*

I loved that the episode was slower. More focused on the characters than crazy plot twists and cramming too much in. That's one of the biggest problems I have with Moffat. I really hope he returns to RTD's structure of the show with more standalone episodes (although I don't really see that happening).

Aslo, CONFIDENTIALS ARE BACK!! OMG! Shorter and I hate the stupid generic name and I hope people will continue ripping them and putting them online, but you know, having any sort of extra material that isn't a small short streaming video locked for those outside UK ROCKS! I sooo missed connecting to Jenna the way I did with other actors, just cause I haven't seen her in many behind the scenes stuff.

But me feeling like I'm not too attached to Jenna/Clara also has to do with the fact that we've seen so little of her characterization, like you said. I fear it won't change much :( Why couldn't we have gotten a new showrunner for the amazing Peter Capaldi?

Vastra and Jenny are married, but we still only watch them lock lips for a contrived sharing oxygen moment?
What was that about?! It got me raging. I was just thinking while watching this ep how we've never seen them kiss, and then we get this sort of a kiss which wasn't a kiss really?

part of me wants Moffat to keep his grubby typing fingers off of the era when I consistently loved Doctor Who
The point I agree with you most strongly about!! LEAVE MY RTD ERA ALONE! I'm particularly protective about the whole Doctor/Rose thing. It may have been blown out of proportions and taken out of context, but I've held the "clingy girlfriend" comment against him from the moment I heard about it and it was one of the reasons I approached his era being a bit meh about him taking over. Rose's story arc and the end of her story to me is one of the most beautiful, rounded stories in any TV shows I've ever watched, and I do not want him mess with it in any way!

And yes, RIP dinosaur :( Why do dinosaurs keep getting killed on this show? :(
