Kate smiled as she roamed the halls of the Sanctuary. She couldn’t believe Magnus had actually left her in charge for a couple days, but at the moment, she wasn’t going to complain. Will and Magnus had headed to Peru to bag a new, but docile, abnormal while Henry and the Big Guy headed to San Diego Comic Con. Henry had wanted her to go with them, but someone needed to stay behind and watch over the Sanctuary, and that someone was Kate.

After feeding the abnormals, she headed upstairs to make herself something to eat but she was interrupted by a text message.

‘Answer the door and help me with my bags. - N. Tesla’

Kate chuckled and shook her head, texting him back, and walking to the front door slowly.

‘You don’t even say please - why should I help you? - K’

‘Fine…pleeeeease come to the door, open it, and help me with my bags before I find my own way in and teach you a thing or two about upsetting an old man. - N. Tesla’

‘Gee, you really know how to make a girl feel all warm inside. I’ll be there in a sec. - K’

Kate took her time in answering the door and when she did, she found an impatient, sweat-soaked ex-vampire in a black suit. He pushed past her, hurrying in, and threw his bags down.

“What the hell took you so long?” he asked, removing his coat.

“I was feeding the abnormals downstairs,” she defended herself. “I have a job to do.”

“Ah, so now that you’re under Helen’s employment, you’re also her new lap dog?” he asked, giving a toothy smile. “It always seemed to me that you were your own boss and didn’t take orders…guess I was wrong.”

“For your information, Edward Cullen, I am not Dr. Magnus’s lap dog, and if anyone’s a dog, it’s you.” She poked his chest hard, giving him a shove. “I think you, of all people, would get on your knees if she needed a footstool.”

“Only if she were wearing a skirt,” He winked with another toothy grin.

“You’re gross.” She rolled her eyes at him and led him upstairs to the guest quarters. “And why the hell are you wearing a suit? It’s hotter than hell outside.”

“And how would you you know what Hell felt like, Miss Freelander?” he asked, following her.

“I dunno,” she turned her head to look at him. “Probably the same way you do.”

Nikola smiled at this. Yes, he liked Kate Freelander a lot.

“So, who’ve you vamped up this time?” Kate opened the door to his usual guest bedroom and waited by the door. Nikola put his things down and instead of staying in his room he decided to be a bother to the newest Sanctuary member. “No, wait, don’t tell me - lemme guess…you’ve done something worse! Let’s see…you’ve turned people into brain-eating zombies and now you need a place to hide.”

“As usual you’re wrong, but I admire the fact that you think so highly of me. In fact, I’m here because I know Helen and her band of merry do-gooders are away from the Sanctuary, and I need a place to relax without her breathing down my neck.” Nikola followed her, but when he realized she wasn’t going down to the wine cellar, he grabbed her arm and brought her with him. Normally he liked to drink alone but he was in a decent enough mood to have company.

“I think that’s the first time I’ve ever heard you say a bad thing about her. Are you still upset ‘cause she won’t sleep with you?” She grinned, as he led her into the elevator.

“From what I’ve gathered in my observations, it’s not my sex life you have to worry about. It’s yours.”

“Mine? Dude, there is nothing wrong with my sex life.”

“Well, dude, considering you probably haven’t had sex since you’ve started here, and Henry is taking his time in trying to seduce you, I’d say there is something wrong with your sex life. You don’t have one, and neither do I, really.”

When the elevator stopped, Nikola escorted her out like the gentleman that he was, and led the way to the wine cellar.

“So you’re what? - leading me to the wine cellar to get me drunk and have your way with me? Sorry, I don’t like wine.”

“That’s because someone probably picks out shit for you to drink, but not me, Miss Freelander.” Nikola looked through the hundreds, if not thousands, of bottles of wine Helen had, and picked one even Kate would like. “As for having my way with you, no; I’m not that desperate.”

“Gee thanks,” she rolled her eyes. “I forgot you were saving your desperation for Dr. Magnus.” She gave a hard pat on his back, causing him to stumble and cough. “But since she’s not here…why are you? I don’t really buy your ‘I need to relax’ excuse.”

“Normally I’d say, ‘you can see right through me’, but I was being truthful - I needed a place to relax and here seemed like the best place.” Nikola then led her to the library where they could sit and talk. This felt weird to Kate at first. She didn’t think Tesla was the kind of guy who’d just sit and talk to anybody, but she was never just anybody.

Tesla sat on one of the couches and patted the seat next to him. Kate shrugged and flopped down next to him. After Nikola poured the wine, they sat in silence for a while, and Tesla managed to steal a couple of quick glances at his drinking companion.

“You know, I’ve never worn a pair of jeans in my life,” he said, looking at Kate’s tight fitting jeans. “Never could stand the texture.”

“I think we should give you a makeover,” Kate said, sipping her wine. “Put you in a pair of jeans and a plaid shirt…” she laughed, taking in Tesla’s cringing face.

“Oh for Heaven’s sake!” he exclaimed. “A plaid shirt? I don’t think so.”

“And maybe we can take your hair down a notch. You’re the only guy I know who glues his hair to the ceiling.”

“Oh really, you walking jewelry store?” He shifted on the couch, turning his body to face hers. “You, the woman who looks like a fishing lure with your dangling earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and fingerless leather gloves. You want to talk to me about fashion?”

Kate tried to suppress a smile, but she couldn’t hold back any longer.

“So what, you’re saying I need fashion advice? You’re the one who looks like you just came from a funeral home!”

“Okay, okay, enough.” Nikola finished the rest of his wine and placed the glass on the coffee table. “Go on, finish your drink.”

“Why?”

“I’m going to take you somewhere.” He stood up, adjusting his cravat.

“That funeral home I mentioned?”

“Just finish your wine before I turn 162, please,” he huffed.

When she finished, Tesla took her glass, placed it next to his, and escorted her down the Sanctuary halls, and towards his room.

“No way, what the hell are you gonna do to me?!” she stood back as he opened the door.

“Teach you how to dress properly, now get in there.”

“Well that was a serious waste,” said Will as he and Helen walked into the Sanctuary, bags in hand. “It wasn’t an abnormal - it was some idiot in a costume scaring the natives and trying to bring in tourists!”

“I know, Will, but it wasn’t a complete waste,” she said, removing her coat. “We still got to see the beautiful scenery.”

Will gave his trademark smirk and shook his head, then looked up as he saw a figure trying to run away.

“Tesla?” he asked. The figure stopped and let out a low, but audible groan.

“What?” he asked, obviously annoyed.

“Nikola, what are you doing here? What’ve you done?” Helen asked in a panic. She headed upstairs, but Nikola tried to stop her.

“No, don’t come closer.”

“What’s wrong?” she asked in panic. Nikola was hiding his body behind the wall, only his head poking out.

“Your newest recruit and I…well, to put it simply, she’s now dressed like me, and she made me look like a tall version of Henry. It’s not a pretty sight. I look like an idiot.”

“But you look less uptight than usual!” Kate yelled from down the hall.

“Oh shut up!” he yelled back at her.

“Come on Nikola, let me see what you look like.” Helen smiled, stepping closer to her old friend with Will on her heels. Will took out his phone and got ready to take a picture.

“There’s no way I’m missing this.” Will exchanged a smile with Helen.

“Put that down!” Nikola growled at Will through his teeth.

“Uh, no…but you should get out of here before one of us comes to get you.”

“Don’t threaten me, you little twit.” Tesla gathered the rest of his pride, closed his eyes, and took a step out from behind the wall and let Will snap a picture of him. He opened his eyes at the sound of Will and Helen laughing and saw they were pointing at him.

He was dressed in a pair of jean shorts with a blue and red plaid short-sleeve plaid shirt, and black sandals. But, that wasn’t the end of his transformation. Kate had gone into Henry’s room and grabbed his wrist watch and put it on Nikola, but Tesla’s wrists were so small, the watch didn’t fit properly. And lastly, his hair was styled with a thousand hair products, and spiked in various directions.

“I’m going to kill her.” Nikola said under his breath. “All right, now get out here, Freelander!”

“Okay, okay…” she trailed off, trying to walk in the heels Nikola had stolen from Helen’s room.

Kate came out wearing a black suit that shaped nicely to her body. She wore a silk button up blouse and a black tie with white pin stripes. The top two buttons of her jacket were buttoned, leaving the last one still open. And lastly, her hair was pulled back and twisted into a clip; Tesla originally wanted to put it in a bun, but Kate threatened to kick his ass if he tried, so he settled for this.

“Kate, you look amazing.” Helen smiled. “What brought this on, you two?”

“I dunno,” Kate shrugged. “Ask him - he’s the one who suggested a makeover after criticizing my own personal taste in clothes. But if he was going to put me in this, I was going to make him look less like a funeral home director.”

“Well, I’m quite pleased the way this turned out.” Helen looked at Nikola and shook her head. “Him on the other hand…I think you should go back to suits.”

“My pleasure,” he snapped, stomping his way to his guest room, slamming the door behind him.

“Actually, he doesn’t look that bad, but I don’t think bright colors do well with him,” Will said.

“Exactly,” Kate grinned. “Why do you think I chose Henry’s closet?”

“You’re a little bit evil for that,” Helen complimented.

“Thanks.” Kate smiled. “Just a little bit.”
