It didn’t take much for Henry to grow jealous quickly, especially the days when his wolf was near the surface; today just happened to be one of those days.
He was just returning his latest book on Lycanthropy when he stopped in the hall. His nose picked up the scent of his girlfriend, Kate Freelander, and another familiar friend, Declan Macrae. Henry shrugged his shoulders and continued towards the library. Just as he’d set his foot in, he saw the two sitting very close on the couch. The couch Henry thought was his and Kate’s.
Henry felt his wolf growl in disapproval. The library was for everyone, but throughout the two years Kate’s been with the Sanctuary, the couch had always been theirs; an unwritten rule the residents knew about.
He saw Declan lean over Kate’s small form to grab something and he heard her giggle reverberate through the room. She covered her mouth with her hand; that was her shy, flirty giggle.
Henry suddenly wondered if he knew just too much about his girlfriend; no, not just his girlfriend - his mate; the one person he decided to spend the rest of his life with. Helen called Kate ‘The Chosen One’. None of Henry’s previous girlfriends managed to stay longer than a few months, and Kate lasted for over two years.
“That is so bad!” Kate exclaimed with a laugh, shoving Declan softly. He heard the soldier laugh with her and wondered what was so funny.
The wolf growled in disapproval once again. ‘There goes strike two against Declan Macrae.’ Henry thought. ‘If he keeps this up, he’s going to be a dead soldier instead of a laughing one.’
He saw Kate turn her head and she immediately turned back around. She and Declan quickly shoved whatever papers they were working on in a black binder. Henry took a few long strides over to them, wearing a fake smile on his face.
“What’re you guys up to?” Henry asked, holding the book at his side.
“Uh…we were working on these schematics for Tesla. For once he actually needs some help, but we’re done now.” Kate answered quickly. She neatly arranged the papers and gave them to Declan. “What’s up?”
“I was just returning a book on werewolves.” Henry replied, trying to cover the hurt in his voice. His mate and friend were hiding something from him, and he didn’t like it. The two stared up at him, waiting for him to leave.
Henry sighed and turned away to place the book back on the shelf he got it from, then disappeared from the library.
He made it to the bedroom he shared with Kate and flopped himself down on the bed, sulking. Deep inside, he knew Kate’s sudden switch in mates was due to his own abnormality. Henry was always scared his wolf would hurt her, and he was certain she wasn’t really fond of his abnormal side.
Henry closed his eyes and let Kate’s scent from her pillow fill his nose. She smelled so sweet. Her perfume and shampoo mixed with her normal scent; it always drove him to the point of lust, especially when she stood too close.
Suddenly, Henry’s eyes snapped open. What the hell was he doing here when his lifetime mate was in the library flirting with a Sanctuary soldier? Besides, Declan was involved with Ashley, wasn’t he? Or maybe he was using Ashley to get to Kate. If this was true, Declan wasn’t going to live to see the night.
Henry ran out of the room and headed in the direction of the library. He spotted the two at one of the tables, standing close. Declan spotted him first and gave a nervous smile. Henry was having none of that.
He marched straight over to Kate, his eyes glowing in amber, grabbed her, and kissed her fiercely. He growled against her lips with one hand in her dark hair and the other rested on her jean covered bottom.
Kate was stunned at first, but she’s experienced Henry’s sudden urge of dominance before, so she reacted quickly, grabbing the front of his tight black shirt. She sensed the wolf was in control now, not necessarily Henry; Henry was always a bit shy but he always took things slowly, pouring everything he had into one kiss.
Finally, he pulled away and turned to Declan.
“Who the hell do you think you are, flirting with my girlfriend?!” Henry snapped. Declan’s eyes got wide and he jumped back a little, surprised at the usually calm man in front of him. “And how the hell can you just hurt Ashley like that?! Did you think she wouldn’t find out?”
“Henry-” Declan started but only received a shove from Henry, knocking him on his ass.
“Henry, stop it! He didn’t do anything!” Kate yelled and stood between them. “What the hell’s wrong with you?”
“What the hell is wrong with me?” Henry asked, shaking his head at the question. “Gee, I dunno…could it because that fucking tea bag over there is trying to take my place as your mate?! I told you that if you decided to mate with me, it was for life, and now…”
“Henry!” Ashley yelled from the door, spotting Declan on the floor. “Dude, what the hell?”
“Your biscuit eating, tea drinking boyfriend is trying to steal Kate away from me, so if that’s not a reason for you to kill him-” Henry started but Kate grabbed his arms, forcing him to look at her.
“He’s not trying to get me, you idiot! We’re planning your “surprise” birthday party!”
“My…what?” Henry calmed down, his eyes turning back to their normal color.
“Your surprise birthday party,” Ashley said, helping Declan off the floor. “We’re all in on it, and Kate was going to take you out of the Sanctuary tomorrow long enough for us to decorate by the time you got back.”
“Uh oh…” he closed his eyes and sighed, resting his head on Kate’s, as if trying to hide his face from the man he just pushed to the floor.
“I think the words you’re looking for are, ‘I’m sorry, Declan, for pushing your arse on the floor, and for yelling about stealing my girlfriend. It won’t happen again.’” Declan said, rubbing his bottom.
“Yeah, what you just said.” Henry cleared his throat.
“A very heartfelt apology, Foss,” Declan smiled.
“Dude, I really am sorry,” Henry looked up at the other man. “The wolf gets kinda…”
“Jealous,” he finished Henry’s sentence. “I know, Kate told us.” Declan put his hands up, not needing an explanation.
“Well now that your mystery is solved, you oaf, your party isn’t a surprise anymore.” Ashley crossed her arms, frowning.
“Well, if you still plan on it, I promise to be surprised.” He grinned.
“The geek’s back.” Kate smiled. “All right, come on…”
“Where’re we going?” Henry asked as Kate stood behind him and placed her hands on his back, pushing him out of the library.
“Our room.”
“Why?”
“Something tells me that even though you’re feeling better now, your wolf will want to re-claim his mate.” Kate stood beside him and smiled seductively.
“You know me too well,” he growled, shoving her against the wall, kissing her hard. After a few seconds, he pulled her from the wall with his lips still attached to hers, and walked them in the direction of their room.
They finally made it to their room, only to not be seen until the next day.
